Japan: more sales data for Week 40 2018, Super Mario Party, Fiscal Year (Media Create, Dengeki)

Here’s the latest sales data reports from Media Create, Dengeki, and Famitsu!

Media Create (Week 40)

Today, Media Create shared their weekly report on video games sales in Japan. It reveals that Hardwares sales topped 71 000 units during Week 40, which is 96.24% of Week 39 sales. The drop is mostly due to the announcement of the price cut for the PlayStation 4 Pro.

Software-wise, Media Create report that Super Mario Party sold about 143 000 units. As the very first Mario Party game on Nintendo Switch, it’s off to a strong start… a much better one than Mario Party 10, which sold about 52 000 units at launch. Of course, that was on the Wii U of all platforms, so a direct comparison isn’t exactly fair.

Usually, Mario Party games tend to sell on the long run: Mario Party 10, for example, sold over 250 000 units in total… that’s 5 times launch week sales. Therefore, it’s no wonder Media Create expect Super Mario Party to end up selling a lot of units, especially with the holiday season (Christmas, New Year, where a significant boost in sales is to be expected) in a couple of months.

Dengeki (Week 40)

Dengeki report slightly lower sales for Super Mario Party, with about 142 000 units sold during launch week: that’s about 50% for the sell-through ratio. This shows that both Nintendo and retailers are pretty confident in the game, and they’re quite right: they will have no trouble selling the remaining units pretty quickly (and they will be able to avoid shortages)!

As mentioned on Wednesday, it’s the best opening for the series since Mario Party 9, that ended up selling over 750 000 units. As such, if launch week sales are any indication, it’s pretty safe to say Super Mario Party is going to end up one of the best-selling entries in the series. Just like Media Create, Dengeki expect strong sales during the end of year holiday season, but also beyond.

Other sales data this week include Mega Man 11 with 27 000 units sold on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 (combined, unfortunately), and Sumikko Gurashi: Atsumare! Sumikko Town with about 6 000 units sold.

As mentioned previously, sales declined during the first half of the current Fiscal Year, due to the lack of major releases:

  • Hardware: 56.6 billion Yen (-26.9%)
  • Software: 61.4 billion Yen (-25.6%)
  • Total: 118 billion Yen (-26.2%)

However, Dengeki expect things to change during the second half of the Fiscal Year (which started on October 1st), thanks to major titles such as Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. They also expect sales to be concentrated on that second half.

Usually, between 56% and 65% of total sales for a given Fiscal Year come from the second half (October to March). The highest was back in 2004, with 64.9% of sales during the second half, and the lowest was in 2008 with 56.2% of sales.

If we expect sales in Fiscal Year 2018-19 to fall within that range (between 56% and 65% of sales coming from the second half), then we can estimate them to land around 262 to 337.1 billion Yen. That would be quite the drop from the previous Fiscal Year, when sales topped 406.4 billion Yen.

As such, Dengeki hope that sales during the second half of the year will increase dramatically compared to the previous year, so that total sales for the full Fiscal Year end up on the rise.
