Japan: more sales data for Week 32 2018, Summer season, more (Media Create, Dengeki)

More sales data from Japan, with the latest reports from Media Create, Dengeki, and Famitsu!

Media Create (Week 32, pre-Obon)

Today, Media Create shared their weekly report on video games sales in Japan. It reveals that Software sales topped 460 000 units during Week 32, which is 92.64% of Week 31 sales. That drop is mostly due to the new releases, which all sold rather small amounts: total sales of new games only account for 53.85% of their sales during Week 31.On the other hand, sales of previously released games increased to 118.54% of Week 31 sales, but unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to compensate for the drop in sales of new games.

WarioWare Gold had a rather good second week: it sold 60% of Week 31 sales during Week 32, which is a rather soft drop. This shows that there’s noticeable interest in the game.

Media Create points out that Obon has had a positive impact on games on Nintendo platforms, giving Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker as example. The Nintendo Switch version sold 11 000 units this week, which is 137.95% of Week 31 sales!

Unfortunately, since the Obon holidays are spread out this year, sales of previously released games only account for 60% of sales during the same period last year (August 7th to August 13th). Total Software sales (including new releases) are also down: they only account for 70.05% of sales during the same period. So far, the Obon period has been rather week this year.

Dengeki (Week 32, Summer Season)

Dengeki report that Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum ‘n’ Fun was the best-selling game during Week 32 in Japan. It sold about 23 000 units during its 4th week on the market, bringing the total since launch to over 150 000 units. Fun fact: the first three games all sold about 23 000 units each, and the end results were actually pretty close. This Top 3 could have ended up looking different if even one game had sold a few hundreds copy more than it did! As for Okami HD, it sold about 12 000 units at launch.

This week, the market is both down and up at the same time:

  • Hardware sales are up by 5.2%, to 88 000 units
  • Software sales are down by 7.2%, to 453 000 units.

Overall, both Hardware and Software were on the low side, especially Software as no game managed to sell even 30 000 units… not the best of outlooks for the Summer holidays! As pointed out several times before, this rather week performance is due to the lack of big hit this year. The previous years all had one or several games that sold a lot in July and August:

  • 2014: Yo-kai Watch 2 (Nintendo 3DS, 2.77 million units)
  • 2015: Yo-kai Watch Busters (Nintendo 3DS, 1.2 million units)
  • 2016: Yo-kai Watch 3 (Nintendo 3DS, 1.09 million units)
  • 2017: Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age (Nintendo 3DS, PlayStation 4, 3.02 million units), and Splatoon 2 (Nintendo Switch, 1.09 million units).

2014 to 2017 all had million-sellers to pull the market up, but there’s no such game this year. As of this week, the best-selling game is Octopath Traveler, which has sold over 170 000 units: it’s not even reached 200 000 units yet, so forget about million-sellers… (It definitely would have sold a lot more with ample stock, but that’s another story!).

The worst thing is, the few weeks left for the Summer season will not be any better: there isn’t any game that could sell over 200 000 units on the horizon, so they expect the market to enter a rough period starting the week after the next one (Week 34).

For the Summer season as a whole, the key point will be how much the evergreen titles on Nintendo Switch will be able to pull the market on their own.
