[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 8, 2018 (February 19th – February 25th) [Top 50]

Week 8 saw the release of quite a few games, but unfortunately, the only Nintendo Switch release (Rayman Legends: Definitive Edition) didn’t manage to chart in the Top 20 from Media Create. In other words, it’s sold less 3 898 units, which is not surprising for the Rayman series in Japan (in comparison, the Wii U version sold 3 415 units at launch).

Just like Hardware, Nintendo Switch Software sales remain remarkably steady. Take Splatoon 2 for example: it sold an additional 19 501 units this week, so only 11% less than during the previous week, and 2 062 345 units since launch. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe saw a similar drop (-10%), with 17 259 units sold. It’s getting closer and closer to the 1.5 million units milestone: it’s currently standing at 1 363 646 units sold.

As for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, it’s one of the only two games that saw its sales increase this week (not counting Star Wars: Battlefront II, heavily discounted at retailers). With 12 252 units sold this week, the increase is still limited (+4%), but it’s quite remarkable almost a year since launch (and without anything special to boost sales, like new DLC or discounts).

Super Mario Odyssey is also holding above the 10 000 units/week threshold, with 11 639 units sold this week, and 1 626 145 units sold. And if the rumours about further DLC are true, we’re definitely not going to see sales slow down any time soon… not that they were showing any signs of slowing down in the first place.

Now, let’s take a look at how games in the second half of the Top 20 are faring:

  • 11./10. [NSW] Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle (Nintendo) – 8.634 / 151.225 (-32%). A bigger drop than other Nintendo Switch games, but nothign that will prevent it from reaching 200 000 units LTD;
  • 12./15. [3DS] Pokemon Ultra Sun / Ultra Moon (Pokemon Co.) – 8.614 / 1.566.656 (-8%). Most likely, it’s going to keep selling steadily until the mainline Pokémon RPG for Nintendo Switch is finally revealed;
  • 14./14. [NSW] Bayonetta 2 (Nintendo) – 5.443 / 14.975 (-43%). No Non-Stop Climax Edition this week (completely sold out), but a good second week for the stand-alone version. It now remains to be seen whether it’s going to keep selling on the long run or not;
  • 17./18. [3DS] Mario Party: The Top 100 (Nintendo) – 4.271 / 165.894 (-27%). It’s been holding in the Top 20 for a surprising long time after the holiday season, but it’s most likely going to drop from it within the next couple of weeks;
  • 18./20. [NSW] 1-2-Switch (Nintendo) – 4.215 / 403.972 (+1%). One of the only two games that saw an increase in sales this week. It looks like Nintendo Switch owners need their party game fix!

Nothing much to say about Hardware this week, as nothing really changed… well, almost nothing. The Nintendo Switch is back to being the best-selling console in Japan, but it’s actually due to PlayStation 4 sales dropping. Indeed, Switch sales are remarkably stable, with 39 696 units sold during Week 8. It doesn’t look like the situation is going to change drastically before the release of Kirby: Star Allies on March 16th.

Meanwhile, Nintendo 3DS sales are also stable, albeit uneventful. Again, the lack of new releases isn’t going to help with sales, especially as there are not that many games that could drive sales in a significant manner so later in the handheld’s lifecycle.
