[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 8, 2017 (Feb. 20 – Feb. 26) [Top 50]

This week saw quite a lot of releases in Japan, but unfortunately, none of them were on Nintendo platforms. At least, the various Wii U and Nintendo 3DS in the Top 20 held quite well, and some of them even managed to avoid dropping out of it despite the numerous entries.
With 13 441 units sold, Pokémon Sun and Moon was the best-selling game on Nintendo platforms, with only -8% compared to Week 7. It will be interesting to see how the game sells during holiday weeks, as it’s been holding rather well during some of the slowest weeks of the year so far.
As for Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 3 Professional, the drop during Week 3 is rather limited with 13 093 units sold (-10%). There’s no doubt that the shortages from Week 2 “helped” with sales during Week 3, as retailers finally got some copies.
Those two titles are the only games on Nintendo platforms in the Top 10 this week, but here’s how those in the second half of the Top 10 did:
- 11./07. [3DS] Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS <ACT> (Nintendo) – 7.050 / 976.825 (-8%). Just like Pokémon Sun and Moon, it will be interesting to see how that one sells during holiday weeks, especially after the fantastic performance during the holiday period;
- 14./09. [3DS] Yo-Kai Watch 3: Sukiyaki (Level 5) – 6.106 / 675.260 (-10%). Yo-kai Watch may not be the incredible powerhouse it was just a couple of years ago, this third version of Yo-kai Watch 3 is still selling pretty steadily;
- 15./08. [3DS] Poochy & Yoshi’s Woolly World (Nintendo) – 5.394 / 92.286 (-22%). This one dropped harder than the other Nintendo 3DS titles this week, but sales remain strong enough to allow it to remain in the Top 20;
- 18./16. [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf – Welcome amiibo (Nintendo) – 4.024 / 134.618 (+0%). One of the few titles that saw an “increase” in sales this week. This “old” game from 2012 certainly like Media Create’s Top 20 a lot!
- 19./20. [WIU] Minecraft: Wii U Edition (Microsoft Game Studios) – 2.775 / 294.460 (-1%). Wii U sales may be cratering, this one still hasn’t left the Top 20 for more than a couple of weeks in a row. That’s the power of Minecraft for you!
- 20./19. [3DS] Momotaro Dentetsu 2017: Tachiagare Nippon!! (Nintendo) – 2.575 / 289.306 (-11%). If sales for the Top 20 were just a bit better, it’s not sure that one would still be hanging around…

Hardware-wise, there’s not much to say. Wii U sales certainly didn’t get any better this week, and the console was actually outsold by the Xbox One thanks the release of a new bundle. Naturally, sales will keep getting worse, especially with the Nintendo Switch releasing this Friday (March 3rd)!
As for the Nintendo 3DS, sales dropped again this week, which is no surprise given the total lack of new releases. With 21 541 units sold, Nintendo’s handheld sold about 4 000 units less than during the same week last year. The Year on Year drop for 2017 is about 9 000 units so far, thanks to surprisingly good first two weeks.
Unfortunately, it’s only going to get worse in the upcoming weeks and months, though Monster Hunter XX releasing on March 18th should improve things a bit. But since this is “just” the G version of a spin-off (albeit a popular one) for a series that’s already seen quite a few entries on Nintendo 3DS, the increase in sales should remain rather limited (especially so late in the Nintendo 3DS lifecycle).
