[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 27, 2017 (July 3rd – July 9th) [Top 50]

There were a couple new releases this week in the Media Create Top 20, but nothing on Nintendo platforms. Overall, this was a rather uneventful week for the Japanese market, the calm before the storm of the upcoming weeks (New Nintendo 2DS XL launch during Week 28, Splatoon 2 launch during Week 29, and Dragon Quest XI: Sugisarishi Toki o Motomete launch during Week 30).

This week, Nintendo Switch sales are slighly up, and so it’s no wonder sales are flat for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, one of the must-haves on the platform. With 13 436 units sold this week (-7%), it’s getting closer and closer to the 600 000 threshold (which should happen before the end of the month, especially with Splatoon 2 expected to boost Hardware sales).

As for ARMS, it’s doing ok so far, though nothing mindblowing… yet? It sold 12 653 units during its fourth week on the market. It will be interesting to see what kind of impact Splatoon 2 will have on its sales: will it completely steal its thunder, or will it instead “enhance” its sale with new Splatoon 2 players picking up another competitive multiplayer title at the same time?

So far, 161 360 units have been sold so far, and ARMS should be able to reach 200 000 units sold by the end of the month or in Early August.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is also selling pretty steadily, with 7 830 units sold this week (-14%), and 530 012 units since launch. Combined, both versions of the game have sold at least 663 036 units (530 012 + 133 024) since launch. In order for them to reach 1 million units before the end of the year, they need to sell the remaining 336 964 units during the next 25 weeks, so at least 13 478 units/week.

Radiant Historia: Perfect Chronology, on the other hand, had a terrible second week with a 78% drop (on par with many others JRPGs, though). It’s pretty clear it won’t come close to the total sales of the original, but at the very least, it should be able to reach 50 000 units LTD.

Next, we have Monster Hunter XX at #8 for another week, with 4 328 units (-28%). Sales remain steady enough, especially during such an uneventful week. It doesn’t look like the Nintendo Switch version has had any noticeable impact so far. The upcoming weeks (with the launch of the New Nintendo 2DS XL and the start of the Summer holidays) will tell us if this version is going to eat into the sales of the 3DS one or not.

Finally, we have Pokémon Sun and Moon at #10, with +11% in sales (3 405 units). There really isn’t anything to explain this sudden increase in sales, seemingly not due to any sort of event or promotion. So far, 3 284 888 units have been sold so far (retail only, exclusive the dual-pack).

Next, here’s the sales for the games in the second half of the Top 20:

• 14./06. [3DS] The Alliance Alive (FuRyu) – 3.072 / 39.578 (-70%). Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like the great word of mouth is helping, most likely due to used sales (one of the reasons JRPG rarely sell on the long run);
• 16./17. [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf – Welcome amiibo (Nintendo) – 2.804 / 198.696 (-3%). With the upcoming launch of the New Nintendo 2DS XL, and the beginning of the Summer holidays, it looks like this one is going to stay in the Top 20 for a few more weeks!
• 17./18. [3DS] Dragon Ball Heroes: Ultimate Mission X (Bandai Namco Games) – 2.594 / 175.491 (-6%). Sales remain quite steady, which is good news as the Summer holidays are drawing near;
• 19./20. [3DS] Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS (Nintendo) – 2.409 / 1.059.665 (-2%). Another game that really doesn’t want to leave the Top 20 (and isn’t going to leave it for yet a few more weeks).

This week, Nintendo Switch shipments were quite steady, which is good news as the release of Splatoon 2 is drawing near. We don’t really know how many units Nintendo will ship to retailers, but we can expect a significant increase over the past few weeks. That being said, the real question isn’t so much shipments for Splatoon 2 launch, but the following weeks.

During Week 27, 26 256 units were sold, as opposed to 25 805 units during Week 26.

As for the Nintendo 3DS, sales are very slightly down with 14 890 units sold (as opposed to 15 720 units during Week 26). Next week will see the release of the New Nintendo 2DS XL (on July 13th) and several key titles (Ever Oasis, Hey! Pikmin), so we can expect a significant increase in sales.

However, it remains to be seen what kind of impact this new model will have on sales. Will people who have never owned a Nintendo 3DS before finally? Will players who already own one will finally be convinced to upgrade? And what about sales on the long run?

One thing’s for sure: sales are bound to remain strong in the following weeks, what with Dragon Quest XI: Sugisarishi Toki o Motomete and its bundle on July 29th, and the Summer holidays.

Finally, the Wii U sold 164 units this week.
