[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 27, 2016 (July 3rd – 10th) [Top 50]

Update 2: added the full Top 50!

***

Update: added Famitsu sales: you will find them below!

Also, here’s the sell-through ratio for some of the games:

  • Culdcept Revolt: 60-80%. The game seems to have sold according to retailers expectations, which means that the game’s weak performance wasn’t too much of a surprise to them;
  • Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympics (Wii U): 60-80%. Retailers will have no trouble selling the remaining units, and will in fact need some more in the upcoming weeks;
  • Minecraft: Wii U Edition: 60-80%;
  • Taiko Drum Master: Dokodon! Mystery Adenture: 60-80%

Finally, it looks like more download cards for Pokémon Red Version / Green Version / Blue Version / Yellow Version: Special Pikachu Edition have been sent to retailers. They sold 7 264 units (+2%) this week, and over 200 000 units since launch.

Media Create – Software

Compared to Week 26, Week 27 was quite calmer for the Japanese market, with only 3 new entries in the Media Create Top 20 for Software. One of them is on Nintendo 3DS, and is in fact the best-selling title of the week: Culdcept Revolt. The game sold about 29 000 units, which is a rather disappointing debut.

As comparison, the first Culdcept game on Nintendo 3DS (which wasn’t an originaly entry) sold about 54 000 units during its launch week, in 2012. Culdcept Revolt is the first original entry in almost ten years, but it looks like it didn’t really matter. There’s no doubt the lack of new entry hurt the series as a whole, and this one wasn’t able to attract new players.

What’s more, it’s been 4 years since the last entry (2012), and the market has dramatically changed during those four years. As a result, fans of the series have most likely moved on (to mobile platforms), and there wasn’t (enough) new fans to replace them. Add to that the relative “weakness” of Nintendo 3DS Software sales in 2016, and Culdcept Revolt‘s performance doesn’t seem too surprising.

Word of mouth seem pretty positive for the game so far, which could help sales on the long run… but the problem is, Culdcept isn’t really the kind of game that sells on the long run…

In second place, we have Splatoon, which sold 16 351 units: that’s 4 times more than last week (+211%). The reason for this impressive surge in sales is obviously the new Wii U Premium Pack, which is the new “de facto” bundle for anyone interesting in getting a Wii U in Japan. Sales will drop again next week, before going back up in Late July/Early August when the Summer holidays start.

Since it’s now packed-in with (almost) all new Wii U sold, sales for Splatoon should remain rather steady throughout the rest of the year, with major boosts during the Summer holidays (and minor ones during weeks with public holidays). The end of year holiday period is another beast altogether, as Nintendo’s strategy for that period isn’t very clear yet.

At #3, we have Story of Seasons: Trio of Towns, which sold 15 432 units during its 3rd week on the market. Next week, the game will reach 150 000 units sold, and in two weeks, all units sent to retailers for Day 1 will have been sold. This is a pretty good performance so far, especially since the game is bound to keep selling on the long run.

Next, we have Minecraft: Wii U Edition, which is enjoying pretty steady sales so far. According to Media Create, it sold 9 762 units during its 3rd week on the market: that’s a 7% drop compared to last week. Since launch, about 42 000 copies have been sold, and at this rate, 100 000 units will be reached before the end of Summer. After all, Minecraft is pretty popular with kids, and the Wii U does happen to be a family/kid-friendly platform.

That’s most likely the reason the Wii U version of Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympics is also selling rather well (especially with the Nintendo 3DS version still selling steadily week after week!). 9 329 additional units were sold during during Week 27 (that’s a 13% drop), and 38 285 units since launch. Thanks to the actual Olympics, in August, the game might very well reach 100 000 units before the end of Summer.

As comparison, Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympics on Nintendo 3DS sold 4 363 units last week in Japan (-3%), and is getting closer and closer to the 200 000 units threshold (which could be be reached this month if sales stay that stable: it’s currently at 187 339 units sold in total, not counting digital copies).

Kirby: Planet Robobot is still holding well, with 6 850 units sold during Week 27 (-11%), and 344 903 units since launch. It might not be able to keep up with its predecessor, but it’s still enjoying the usual steady sales the Kirby series is known for. As for Taiko Drum Master: Dokodon! Mystery Adventure, sales are also steady with 5 410 units units during Week 27 (-30%), and 57 210 units since launch.

Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice, which is still struggling to simply match Week 1 sales of its predecessor… It sold 3 959 units last week (-48%), and 245 424 units since launch. After the various marketing campaigns and the anime series, it’s now the extra case as free DLC which failed to have any (noticeable) impact on sales whatsoever.

At #18, we have Pokémon Omega Ruby / Alpha Sapphire making its comeback in the Top 20, with 3 518 units sold during Week 27. According to Media Create, total sales since launch are now at 2 819 752 units (not counting digital copies): a pretty impressive results for a remake (which has now outsold Pokémon LeafGreen / FireRed). It looks like the Pokémania is back in full force for the 20th Anniversary of the series!

Finally, we have Super Mario Maker at #20, with 3 003 units sold (-37%). The game will leave the Top 20 next week, and will only come back during certain holiday weeks.

After all, the Wii U Premium Pack it was bundled with has now been fully discontinued (and it’s extremely unlikely that retailers have stockpiles left to sell, given how tight shipments have been throughout the first half of 2016). Since the vast majority of its sales came from that very Premium Pack, it does make sense that those would drop hard now that said Premium Pack isn’t available in stores anymore.

Hardware-wise, there’s not much to say about the Nintendo 3DS for this week. Its sales are slightly down, due to the lack of noteworthy releases. 20 546 units were sold during Week 27, which is about 2 000 units less than during Week 26 (and 8 000 units less than during the same week in 2016). Thankfully, Yo-kai Watch 3: Sushi / Tempura comes out this Saturday (July 16th), and should provide a healthy boost to Nintendo 3DS sales.

That being said, the impact on sales should be “limited”, and should be more noticeable on the long run (than on launch week). Fans are already equiped, but since the new Yo-kai Dream Medals are compatible with the New Nintendo 3DS (unlike the previous one), it could lead some fans to replace their old Nintendo 3DS (XL) with the latest model.

As for the Wii U, the release of the new Premium Pack including Splatoon had an extremely positive impact on sales: they rose from 4 444 units to 15 470 units, which is pretty impressive for the Wii U (especially with the total lack of new releases until October, and the fact that the game in the bundle came out last year).

It will be interesting to see how the Wii U is going to sell in the upcoming weeks, especially after the Summer holidays. After all, Splatoon has remained popular ever since its launch, in May 2015, and it’s by far the strongest system-seller the Wii U has ever had (not that it had many to begin with…).
