[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 46, 2018 (November 12th – November 18th) [Top 50]

Here’s the latest sales report from Media Create (and Famitsu), covering Week 46 2018 in Japan.

Media Create

This week, there’s quite a lot of new games in the Top 20 provided by Media Create, but the star of the show is quite clearly Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! / Let’s Go, Eevee!. With 661 240 units sold (slighly lower than what Famitsu reported, earlier today), this game has sold several times more than all of the other games in the Top 20 from Media Create combined. That’s Pokémon for you!

We’ve already talked about Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! / Let’s Go, Eevee! sales when Famitsu shared their early sales report earlier today, and so instead of repeating what we said back then, we invite you to check out this post for some comments.

The other entry on Nintendo platforms this week is RPG Maker MV, which sold about 4 700 units at launch according to Media Create. The Nintendo Switch version sold the most, with 2 641 units, but the difference with the PlayStation 4 version is pretty limited (and therefore, not really relevant). Unfortunately, that’s a pretty poor result for the series: RPG Maker MV has the worst opening for the series so far, even below RPG Maker Fes on Nintendo 3DS (7 171 units at launch according to Famitsu data).

While Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! / Let’s Go, Eevee! was on everyone’s mind last week, Super Mario Party is getting ready to enter “holiday mode”. This week, sales only dropped by 10%, with 20 942 units sold. This brings the total to 345 627 (400 000 units will be reached sometime in December). We can safely expect sales to be either stable or on the rise next week.

Unfortunately, Luigi’s Mansion didn’t fare much better during its second week: it sold 9 320 units (-66%), which is pretty average. Unfortunately, that average second week follows a really disappointing launch, and things are looking pretty bleak for the game right now. Sales might improve during the holiday season, but even if they do, it looks like it will take a while for the game to reach 100 000 units.

The good news for Nintendo is that new Nintendo Switch owners didn’t have eyes only for Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! / Let’s Go, Eevee!: the usual evergreen titles saw an increase in sales, though it’s obvious new owners primarily bought the console for Pokémon. But the holiday season is just around the corner, and all those people who bought the console for Pokémon will soon start looking for other games to play. Therefore, we can expect a significant increase in sales for evergreen titles starting next week.

This week, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sold 9 319 units: that’s +10% compared to Week 45. This brings the total to 1 836 063 units LTD. If sales increase again next week, as we expect, then sales may very well go back up the 10 000 units/week threshold that week.

As for Splatoon 2, it also saw a noticeable increease in sales with +18% in a week, and 7 992 units sold. It’s still lagging behind Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (on a weekly basis), but this might change during the holiday season. As of this week, the game has sold 2 698 886 units.

Finally, Media Create report that Minecraft sold 7 449 units this week, which is almost the same as last week (7 562 units, so a 1% drop). Just like Super Mario Party, this game will soon activate “holiday mode”, with significantly higher sales through December. We can definitely expect it to reach 500 000 units by the end of the year, or in January at the very latest.

Next, let’s take a look at how games in the second half of the Top 20 from Media Create are faring:

  • 11./08. [NSW] The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Nintendo) – 6.215 / 1.159.398 (+9%). Sales remain strong after the “big” increase caused by the release of the special edition the previous week;
  • 13./10. [NSW] Super Mario Odyssey (Nintendo) {2017.10.27} (¥5.980) – 3.990 / 1.845.682 (+6%). Steadily moving towards the 2 million units milestone;
  • 14./12. [3DS] Pokemon Ultra Sun / Ultra Moon (Pokemon Co.) – 3.493 / 1.760.304 (+4%). There’s two mainline Pokémon games in the Top 20 from Media Create at once: this is something that has apparently never happened since the original Pokémon games on GameBoy (excluding third versions). It looks like this final Nintendo 3DS games may well stick around in the Top 20 until the end of the year!
  • 16./14. [NSW] Kirby Star Allies(Nintendo) – 2.958 / 642.205. Sales are perfectly flat for Kirby;
  • 18./16. [NSW] Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum ‘n’ Fun! (Bandai Namco Games) – 2.181 / 225.417 (-12%). If the holiday boost doesn’t kick off next week, this one might drop from the Top 20 from Media Create…

Media Create – Hardware

This week, Nintendo Switch sales literally exploded, with over 200 000 units sold: that’s nearly 4 times higher than during the previous week, that had already seen a noticeable increase in sales. Naturally, the main reason behind this big jump is the release of Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! / Let’s Go, Eevee! and its two bundles, but the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate bundle was also released and definitely contributed to the increase.

Unfortunately, Media Create do not provide separate sales data for the various bundles. They also do not report on sales of games until their official release, so we can’t even look at Super Smash Bros. Ultimate sales to see how much the bundle contributed to total Hardware sales. Of course, Media Create will count the units from the bundles sold ahead of the official launch on December 7th, but they will be added to the total, and so there will be no way to know how many units are from the bundle (let alone those sold over launch).

Maybe Media Create will provide sales data for the Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! / Let’s Go, Eevee! and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate bundles in their weekly report on Friday, but it’s not guaranteed.

Next week, sales are inevitably going to drop for the Nintendo Switch, since it’s extremely rare for Hardware sales not to drop after a major boost like this one (outside of the holiday season, of course). However, with Friday being a public holiday, the drop should be slightly better than usual, and even if it’s not, it will be all but temporary: the holiday season is just around the corner after all. The question is how low sales will drop before they bounce back up.

This week, the Nintendo Switch sold over 200 000 units: this is by far one of the best week ever for the console (though not the best one: nothing is going to top launch week sales for a while). And as expected, total sales for 2018 are back up compared to 2017 sales, as if the past few weeks never happened at all. This shouldn’t change before the end of the year, unless something unexpected occurs.

Finally, Nintendo 3DS sales did increase slightly this week, to 6 599 units to be precise. A 381 units increase is definitely nothing to write home about, especially the other Nintendo console sold over 200 000 units!
