[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 43, 2018 (October 22nd – October 28th) [Top 50]

Here’s the latest sales data for the Japanese video game market, courtesy of Media Create and Famitsu!

NB: due to a busy schedule this week, we do not have time for the usual analysis. We’re only going to focus on the new Software releases and Hardware sales this time around. We will be back to our regular scheduling next week!

Media Create

There’s several entries in the Top 20 from Media Create this week, and two of them are on Nintendo platforms.

The first one is Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection International, which sold over 20 000 units on the two platforms it was released on. Unfortunately, the Nintendo Switch only accounts for 7 443 units, which is roughly half the sales of the PlayStation 4 version.

As a whole, the collection didn’t generate much excitement among Japanese players, and those who were looking forward to it clearly preferred to get it on PlayStation 4. The platform split is in line with the one for the other multiplatform “traditional” 2D fighters released in the past year in Japan.

The second entry on Nintendo platforms this week is Beyblade Burst: Battle Zero, which is off to a terrible debut. With only 5 380 units sold, this new game sees the worst debut ever for the series (excluding budget re-releases). Maybe holiday sales will allow it to crawl to a somewhat respectable, but it doesn’t look likely: kids and parents will have much better games to choose from at Christmas…

Finally, we have Yomawari: The Long Night Collection at #17, with 2 997 units sold. That’s not a lot, but the series isn’t exactly known for setting the charts on fire (about 21 000 units at launch for the first one, and 17 000 units for the second one). Therefore, it’s no surprise a collection without any additional content would have limited sales. What’s more, this is pretty much on par for the course for Nippon Ichi Software ports, which are primarily aimed at players in Europe and North America (meaning Japanese sales are inconsequential).

Media Create – Hardware

This week, Nintendo Switch sales dropped to 37 855 units. It looks like some people have started waiting for the Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! / Let’s Go, Eevee! and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate bundles, releasing in a couple of weeks, but it’s not clear if this is the only reason behind the drop. The next couple of weeks will tell us if that’s the case or not! In any case, we’re not going to see a major increase in sales until the two bundles are out in the wild… hopefully, sales will not drop too low until then!

As expected, sales are down by a wide margin Year on Year, due to the release of Super Mario Odyssey (and its bundle) during the same week, in 2017. Unfortunately, the gap between the two years was big enough for 2018 sales to drop below 2017, though as mentioned previously, it’s only temporary. We can safely expect sales to turn around when the two bundles mentioned above are released, though the three weeks before that will only deepen the gap between 2017 and 2018 sales…

Nintendo 3DS sales also dropped this week, from 6 412 units to 5 649 units.
