[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 31, 2018 (July 30th – August 5th) [Top 50]

NB: due to a busy schedule this week, we’re only providing our usual analysis for the new releases in the Top 20 from Media Create this time around. We’ll be back with our regular programming next week!

Media Create

There were quite a few releases this week, which is why there’s many new faces in the Top 20 from Media Create this time around.

The star of the week is Etrian Odyssey X, which sold 71 000 units at launch. This may technically be the worst debut since Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold: The Fafnir Knight, but it’s actually a pretty good performance, for several reasons:

the game suffered from shortages (Atlus even had to apologise for them), due to both retailers and Atlus underestimating demand;
the game came late in the lifecycle of the Nintendo 3DS, with many new releases underperforming in the past couple of years (including several of Atlus’s own releases);
there’s already been 6 Etrian Odyssey games on Nintendo 3DS, so the series may be suffering from franchise fatigue;
it’s not a mainline entry, and more a celebration title featuring elements from all previous Etrian Odyssey games, which means some fans may have been waiting for the next mainline entry instead.

All in all, this was a pretty good performance (despite the shortages), that shows how loyal the fanbase is (something Atlus is well aware of). Of course, it remains to be seen how much the game will end up selling: all previous entries (excluding Etrian Mystery Dungeon spin-offs) sold between 120 000 and 150 000 units LTD, and it will be interesting to see whether Etrian Odyssey X manages to reach that.

Right now, all we can say is that it should easily be able to sell at least 100 000 units, but with how frontloaded sales have been, it most likely will not go much higher than that.

Next, we have Pro Yakyuu Famista Evolution, which sold 42 846 units at launch. This is a great performance, in line with the second entry on Nintendo 3DS (as you can see below). It should be able to keep selling through the Summer holidays, and reach at least 100 000 units LTD.

If it keeps selling through the rest of the year, and gets a boost during the end of year holiday season, it could even reach 200 000 units sold. In any case, it should be able to outsell both entries on Nintendo 3DS, and become the best-selling entry since those on the SNES. Considering there’s no competition on Nintendo Switch (since Konami’s own baseball series is MIA for now), this will be no big surprise.

Here’s how the previous entries in the series sold (NB: Famitsu sales):

Unfortunately, WarioWare Gold is off to a rather lukewarm start, with only 31 018 units sold: that’s one of the worst debut for the series, which is most likely due its late release on Nintendo 3DS. Fortunately, the Summer holidays are in full swing, which means sales should remain somewhat steady in the next couple of weeks. It should have no trouble selling at least 100 000 units, but it most likely go much further beyond that (unless it keeps selling through the rest of the year).

Finally, we have SaGa Scarlet Grace, with roughly 24 000 units sold across the two platforms it was released on: that’s less than half what the PlayStation Vita version (released back in 2016) sold at launch. The Nintendo Switch version sold 9 586 units, which is a respectable performance. Unfortunately, it’s unlikely sales will remain steady on either platform, and in fact, the Nintendo Switch version is most likely going to drop from the Top 20 from Media Create as early as next week.

This week, the Nintendo Switch sold roughly 50 000 units, which is slightly better than Week 30. It looks like the console isn’t going to leave that 50 000 units/week range any time soon: that’s where it’s been hanging for a little while now. While it’s definitely good to see sales remain stable, it’s clear the Nintendo Switch can sell much more than that; unfortunately, without a strong system seller this year, like Splatoon 2 in 2017, it doesn’t look like sales are going to rise much higher during the Summer holidays season.

During the past couple of weeks, the big bump caused by Splatoon 2 made Year on Year comparisons for the Nintendo Switch rather lopsided, but things are now returning to normal. During Week 32 2017, the console sold 61 000 units, with shortages coming back in full force. It looks like starting next week, 2018 sales will start outpacing 2017 sales again, though we don’t know by how much just yet. At least, total YTD sales for 2018 didn’t drop below the 2017 total, which is good news ahead of the latter half of 2018 and its mega hits (Pokémon, Smash).

Meanwhile, on Nintendo 3DS, the release of the Minecraft: New Nintendo 3DS XL Edition bundle for the New Nintendo 2DS XL only provided a slight boost in sales, that went from 8 714 units to 12 586 units. Unfortunately, sales are bound to go down again next week, and it definitely wouldn’t be surprising if they dropped below the 10 000 units/week threshold despite the Summer holidays. So far, sales have been pretty lukewarm for the Nintendo 3DS this Summer, and it doesn’t look like it’s going to be any different during the remaining 5 months.
