Japan – Media Create sales for Week 28, 2015 (July 6 – 12) [Top 50]

Week 28 had two big releases on Nintendo 3DS, and the first one is none other than Yo-kai Watch Busters: Aka Neko-dan / Shiro Inu-tai. Unsurprisingly, the latest game in the extremely popular Yo-kai Watch series took the first spot in Media Create’s Top 20, and sold pretty well during the first two days: 693 538 units.

Based on retailer feedback, the Shiro Inu-tai version (featuring Komasan) was by far the most popular, and was even hard to find in some stores after launch day. Overall, this spin-off did pretty well, especially as it’s based on a game mode already present in Yo-kai Watch 2 Ganso / Honke / Shin Uchi.

Spin-offs generally tend to sell (significantly) worse than the main entries in their respective series, but this didn’t really faze Yo-kai Watch Busters, which should have no trouble reaching the 1 million units milestone down the line. Now, it remains to be seen how well the game will sell during the next few months, especially with Yo-kai Watch 3 not coming out before Summer 2016.

Next, we have Dai Gyakuten Saiban: Naruhodou Ryuunosuke no Bouken, which had a pretty decent debut with over 135 000 units sold during the first four days (roughly 60-80% of all copies sent to retailers, according to Famitsu). While this is significantly less than Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Dual Destinies (~ 250 000 units sold during the first four days), this is quite good for a spin-off with a brand new cast.

Based on the sell-through ratio from Famitsu (60-80%), it looks like the game sold more or less according to Capcom’s expectations (who seems to have given the game a sizeable budget, especially when it comes to advertising). This is worse than the first Ace Attorney Investigations title, but this one came out during the heydays of the Nintendo DS and casual gaming on traditional gaming platforms.

In the next few weeks, we will get to see how Dai Gyakuten Saiban: Naruhodou Ryuunosuke no Bouken will fare in the Media Create chart: will the game keep on selling, thanks to good word of mouth? Will it end up at the same level as Gyakuten Kenji 2 (Ace Attorney Investigations 2)? We’ll have to wait a bit before we can see this for ourselves!

Finally, the last entry this week (for Nintendo platforms) is Super Run For Money Tousouchuu Atsumare! Saikyou no Tousou Monotachi, which is #7. It sold a total of 13 571 units during the first four days, which is quite low. What’s more, Bandai-Namco expected so much more: only 0-20% of all units sent to retailers were sold.

The reason why Bandai-Namco had such high expectations for the game is because the first game sold a lot on the long term: it just kept popping back in Media Create’s Top 20 every now and again, with remarkably stable sales. However, it looks like players weren’t really interested in a sequel to begin with…

Hardware-wise, the Nintendo 3DS is slightly up week on week (mainly due to Yo-kai Watch Busters), with 28 703 units sold. However, the difference with the same week in 2014 is quite striking: this year, the 3DS sold over 30 000 units less. Obviously, there’s a reason for that: Yo-kai Watch 2: Ganso / Honke came out during Week 28 in 2014, so it’s not surprising that the 3DS didn’t sell as much this year.

As for the Wii U, it’s slowly dropping below the 10 000 units/week threshold, and it’s unlikely that Yoshi’s Woolly World will have a significant impact on sales. Therefore, it’s quite likely the Wii U will not be able to avoid going back below the 10 000 units/week threshold next week, but hopefully the Summer holidays (which start at the end of the month) will prevent it from staying there for too long. At least, the Wii U is selling slightly better than last year during the same period.
