Japan – Media Create sales for Week 26, 2015 (June 22 – 28) [Top 50]

During Week 26, one of the most awaited games of the year for the Nintendo 3DS came out in Japan: Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright and Conquest! And as expected, sales are pretty good right out of the gate… in fact, the game has one of the best (if not the best) openings ever for the Fire Emblem series!

During the first four days, the game sold:

– 260 675 copies at retail for both games (Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright + Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest)
– 42 991 copies at retail for the Limited Edition (85 982 units if each Limited Edition counts for two copies, which is how Famitsu chose to take it into account).

With over 302 000 copies sold during the first four days (only at retail, too), Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright and Conquest sold significantly better than Fire Emblem Awakening at launch (over 262 399 copies), which is definitely great news for the series. Since Nintendo gave a bigger budget to the game, there’s no doubt the company is expecting growth and it looks like it’s going to get it.

Now, it remains to be seen how well the game will sell over time: while it’s guaranteed to reach 400 000 units sold before the end of the month (and pass Fire Emblem Awakening at 469 000 units sold by the end of the year), will it manage to reach 500 000 units sold in total?

Unfortunately, Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright and Conquest was the only significant release for the 3DS last week, in Japan. There is Kaitou Joker: Toki o Koeru Kaitou to Ushinawareta Houseki in #16, but with only 5 189 units sold, the game really fails to make an impression (at least, not a positive one!).

However, the other Nintendo games are selling well, and more precisely Rhythm Heaven: The Best+ and Splatoon. The former has reached the 250 000 units milestone (266.726 to be more precise), while the second one just keep on selling insolently with 37 458 additional units for Week 26 (and 348 040 units in total).

What’s more, Splatoon still has a positive impact on Wii U sales, which haven’t gone in the “under 10k/week” territory for a while now. 13 166 units is definitely not healthy, but it’s still better than what the Wii U was selling last year during the same week (10 653 units). What’s more, the gap between the YTD sales in 2015 and 2014 is narrowing (less than 9 000 behind 2014), as you can see in the chart below.

As for the Nintendo 3DS, the release of Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright and Conquest had a positive effect, and sales are on the rise: 32 355 for Week 26, vs. 24 064 units for Week 25. What’s more, the Nintendo 3DS sold better during the same week in 2015, compared to 2014 (27 884 units)… but how long will it last? So far in 2015, sales have been trailing behind those for 2014, and the second half of the year shouldn’t be any better.
