Japan – Media Create sales for Week 20, 2015 (May 11 – 17) [Top 50]

Week 20 was definitely one of the worst weeks of the year for the Japanese video game market. Not only did the best-selling game only sell 15 913 units, but Hardware sales also dropped quite sharply. This week, no new game on Nintendo platforms managed to secure a spot in the Top 20, not even Code Name: S.T.E.A.M..

To say that the new game from Intelligent Systems is off to a slow start is probably the understatement of the year. Since it didn’t even chart in Media Create’s Top 20, that means it sold less than 1 863 units at retail. According to Famitsu, it sold 1 835 units during the first four days, which means that retailers still have over 80% of all the units Nintendo sent for launch.

But it’s the whole market which was in a slump this week: sales aren’t very good for most games. However, there’s quite a lot of titles on Nintendo platforms in the Top 20 this week, mainly due to how poorly other games have been selling.

Hardware-wise, sales dropped for all consoles, but some were more impacted than others. The Nintendo 3DS only sold 16 355 units, which is one of its worst weeks ever: it’s roughly 10 000 units less than last week (26 092 units) and 7 000 units less than Week 20 in 2014 (23 600 units). The gap between 2015 LTD sales and 2014 LTD sales just keeps on widening… As for the Wii U, sales have also dropped rather sharply (11 137 units to 6 428 units), but it remains rather stable Year on Year.
