Japan – Media Create sales for Week 17, 2015 (April 20-26)
During Week 17, Bravely Second: End Layer came out in Japan, and it’s the only entry on a Nintendo console. It sold over 100 000 units during the first four day: not really a bad performance per se, but it’s still a really disappointing one. After all, Bravely Default: Flying Fairy sold over 140 000 units during its launch week, which means that the sequel didn’t come close to the performance of the first game.
Bravely Default ended up selling over 300 000 units in Japan (including the “For the Sequel” edition), and the potential for growth was definitely there for this new IP. Unfortunately, it looks like Bravely Second: End Layer will have a tough time selling as well as its predecessor, let alone doing better…
We don’t really know how many units need to be sold for Tomoya Asano to be able to present his plans for a third entry in the series, but it’s certainly not looking too good right now. Hopefully, sales will remain strong during the Golden Week (which starts today).
Hardware-wise, nothing much happened this week. The Nintendo 3DS is quite stable week on week, with 21 658 units sold, versus 21 824 units last week. But year on year, the console is falling behind 2014, as 33 987 units were sold during Week 17 in Japan that year. As for the Wii U, sales are on the rise with 7 210 units sold (vs. 6 324 last week, and 5 710 units during Week 17 in 2014), maybe in anticipation of Xenoblade Chronicles X.
