[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 14, 2018 (April 2nd – April 8th) [Top 50]

Week 14 saw the release of… well, not a single game, which is why there’s nothing but familiar faces in the Top 20 from Media Create this time around.

Kirby Star Allies is back at the top, with 35 319 units sold: that’s a pretty soft drop (-30%), which bodes pretty well for sales on the long run. Mainline Kirby games generally do tend to sell pretty well over the course of several months, and this one seems to follow the same trend.

After all, it’s already sold nearly 400 000 units since launch (392 413 units to be precise, which means it already has sold that much if you factor in digital sales), and it looks like it will reach half a million thanks to the Golden Week at the end of the month.

The drop for Splatoon 2 is even softer (-15%), which is a good sign as we’ve entered a pretty slow period for video game sales. It sold 21 980 units during Week 14, and if sales keep dropping, it will most likely drop below the 20 000 units/week threshold next week. Since launch, over 2 213 576 units have been sold at retail.

As for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, its sales are basically flat (-4%), with 13 849 units sold this week.

It’s pretty impressive that we’re approaching the first Anniversary of this game, and yet, it’s still hanging around in the Top 20… in fact, it’s back in the Top 5 this week (granted, it’s because we’re in a pretty slow period for video games sales). Since launch, over 1 460 835 units have been sold, and we can expect the 1.5 million milestone to be reached before the end of the month.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild also enjoyed steady sales, which is a postive sign given the slow period the market is currently in. We can definitely expect this one to sell well over the Golden Week. With 8 551 units sold this week, it’s getting closer and closer to the 1 million units milestone, with 947 541 units sold as of this week.

Sales for Super Mario Odyssey are also pretty flat (-3%), and it actually sold pretty much the same amount of copies as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. It sold 8 211 units this week, and it looks like it should stay in that range during the next couple of weeks. 1 684 107 units have been sold since launch at retail.

Unfortunately, Detective Pikachu saw another drop in sales during its third week on the market, but that’s to be expected for this kind of game. It sold 6 959 units this week (-55%), which brings the total since launch to 64 556 unts. It looks like it should be able to sell at least 100 000 units LTD, though it definitely will not happen in the near future (unless Golden Week sales are especially good).

Next, let’s take a look at how games in the second half of the Top 20 from Media Create are faring:

• 12./16. [3DS] Pokemon Ultra Sun / Ultra Moon (Pokemon Co.) – 5.062 / 1.610.978 (-16%). This one isn’t ready to drop from the Top 20!
• 13./14. [NSW] Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition (Koei Tecmo) – 4.789 / 37.338 (-37%). Decent sales so far for this third version of the game;
• 17./20. [NSW] 1-2-Switch (Nintendo) – 3.795 / 427.721 (-5%). Yup, it’s still selling;
• 20./19. [NSW] Dragon Ball: Xenoverse 2 for Nintendo Switch (Bandai Namco Games) – 3.531 / 141.100 (-11%). The Dragon Ball Super anime series is now over, but sales remain steady!

Media Create – Hardware

Hardware-wise, nothing much changed compared to last week. The Nintendo Switch sold 40 016 units this week, which is a slight drop compared to Week 13. We’re in a pretty slow period, and there wasn’t any new releases at all, so it’s a bit surprising that sales did not drop lower. This shows that there’s still continued interest in the platform.

Sales should not drop below 30 000 units even during the worst weeks of the current slow period. After all, the line-up for the upcoming months is sufficiently packed, and the impact of some of the games (such as Nintendo Labo) is still unknown.

Quick note: as of this week, the Nintendo Switch has sold over 4 million units. The console actually reached that milestone a couple of weeks ago, if you go by Famitsu data!

As for the Nintendo 3DS, sales did drop again this week, but that drop is rather limited… not surprising, since sales have already slowed down a fair bit. 9 422 units were sold during Week 14, as opposed to 10 209 during Week 13. The drop compared to the same week last year is still big (about 16 000 units), but it does look like sales are not going to go down much lower in the near future.
