[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 10, 2018 (March 5th – March 11th) [Top 50]

Week 10 2018 saw the releases of a few games, including one on Nintendo Switch: Anata no Shikihime Kyouikutan. Unfortunately, no version managed to chart in the Top 20 from Media Create, which means that the best-selling one sold less 3 321 units… not the best of starts, as you can imagine!

Meanwhile, the usual evergreen titles on Nintendo Switch are still enjoying strong and steady sales. Splatoon 2 is the only one that saw an increase in sales, though it’s pretty limited (+1%). With 22 162 units sold this week, the game has now sold over 2.1 million units at retail alone in Japan. With the comeback of the Nintendo Switch bundle on Friday, we can expect a noticeable increase in sales in Week 12 data!

As for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, their drop Week on Week is eerily similar (-8%), though obviously, the former is still selling more than the latter (17 329 units vs 11 611 units).

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is nearing the 1.5 million units milestone, with 1 399 804 units as of this week (April for 1.5 million units). The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is getting closer to 1 million units at retail alone, with 908 067 units sold as of this week. It looks like it will reach the milestone in May. Super Mario Odyssey isn’t too far behind, with 11 043 units sold (-5%) this week, and 1 648 855 units since launch.

Finally, Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon sales dropped slightly more than the Nintendo Switch games we just mentioned, but it still sold enough to stay in the Top 10 from Media Create one more week.

Next, let’s take a look at how games in the second half of the Top 20 from Media Create are faring:

• 11./02. [NSW] Dragon Quest Builders (Square Enix) – 6.686 / 35.116 (-76%). A rather mediocre second week;
• 12./11. [NSW] Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle (Nintendo) – 5.284 / 163.605 (-26%). Sales keep dropping steadily, but again, nothing that will prevent the game from reaching 200 000 units LTD;
• 14./15. [NSW] 1-2-Switch (Nintendo) – 3.878 / 412.323 (-13%). Yes, it’s not done selling;
• 16./16. [3DS] Mario Party: The Top 100 (Nintendo) – 3.471 / 173.584 (-18%). The 200 000 units milestone just keeps getting closer and closer;
• 17./18. [NSW] Arms (Nintendo) {2017.06.16} (¥5.980) – 3.431 / 379.929 (-7%). While it’s not nearly as popular as Splatoon (even the Wii U game), it’s also selling pretty well in the long run;
• 18./13. [3DS] Doraemon: Nobita no Takarajima (FuRyu) {2018.03.01} (¥5.480) – 3.422 / 8.370 (-31%). A surprisingly good second week, with a rather limited drop (compared to the usual second week drop);
• 20./20. [NSW] Dragon Ball: Xenoverse 2 for Nintendo Switch (Bandai Namco Games) {2017.09.07} (¥6.800) – 3.321 / 128.081 (-1%). Another week in the Top 20 from Media Create!

This week, the Nintendo Switch sold exactly 1 more unit than it did last week… ok, that’s not quite true. As you probably already know, the data provided by Media Create (and Famitsu, Dengeki) are only estimates.

They’re pretty close to the actual sales numbers, but not 100% accurate, so in that case, the only thing that can be said about Nintendo Switch sales is that they’re roughly the same for Week 9 and Week 10. It still makes for an interesting data point, that’s for sure!

Next week, Nintendo will re-release the Splatoon 2 bundle (this time with an artbook/guide as an extra), and it’s expected to have a positive impact on sales. Combined with the release of Kirby Star Allies the previous day, we can expect a significant increase in sales for Week 12, though it’s not clear how high sales will go.

On its own, Kirby Star Allies shouldn’t have too big of an impact, as Kirby games generally tend to sell more on the long run (vs. an explosive debut). Still, it’s a great addition for the Nintendo Switch library, and the focus on local multiplayer will definitely help sales.

Meanwhile, Nintendo 3DS did drop slightly this week, but remain pretty stable overall. Nothing much to say about the handheld this week, as the first major release of 2018 is only coming next week (Detective Pikachu, on March 23rd).
