Today, Kadokawa / Famitsu shared some data for the video game market in Japan, in 2016 (December 28th, 2015 to December 25th, 2016).

Here’s some global data, with the market value:

  • Hardware: 117 050 million Yen (130 050 million Yen in 2015)
  • Software: 182 430 million Yen (190 910 million Yen in 2015)
  • Total: 299 480 million Yen (320 970 million Yen in 2015)

To the surprise of no one, Pokémon Sun and Moon was the best-seller in 2016, and actually sold more than the games ranked #2 to 4 combined. Yo-kai Watch 3: Sushi / Tempura ended up selling over 1.2 million units, which is a major drop compared to the previous entry (even the third version of Yo-kai Watch 2 sold more on its own).

Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS ended at #4 with just 3 weeks on the market, which is rather impressive and not entirely expected. Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 3 sold over 600 000 units, but its sales slowed down pretty quickly.

Back to Yo-kai Watch, with Yo-kai Sangokushi, which enjoyed better sales than expected with 563 395 units sold. As for Yo-kai Watch 3: Sukiyaki, it had much stronger sales than expected, and took retailers by surprise.

Finally, we have Kirby: Planet Robobot at 479 698 units (the usual strong sales on the long run the Kirby series is known for) and Splatoon at 398 251 units (sales did drop a lot during the second year, in part due to Nintendo limiting shipments for the Wii U… and the console itself being done for).

Famitsu – Hardware

Hardware-wise, the Nintendo 3DS was the best-selling platform with 1 874 000 units sold. The Nintendo Classic Mini: Family Computer did really well, with a total of 567 000 units sold by December 25th. Since the Famicom Mini had sold 329 000 units by the end of November, we can calculate that 248 000 units were sold in December.
