[Japan] Famitsu sales for Week 36, 2019 (September 2nd – 8th) [Top 30]

Here’s the latest sales report from Famitsu (and Media Create), covering Week 36, 2019 in Japan.

Famitsu

This week was pretty quiet on the Nintendo Switch front when it comes to new releases. Indeed, there isn’t a single one this time around, though the evergreen titles are there as usual.

NBA 2K2020 sold 13 461 units during its launch week on PlayStation 4, but unfortunately, the Nintendo Switch version is nowhere to be seen (which means it sold less than 6 255 units). The audience for this kind of game is primarily on PlayStation 4, and the Nintendo Switch version has the annoying mandatory download, so it’s definitely no surprise it didn’t sell as much on Nintendo’s console.

Here’s how the other games in the Top 10 fared this week:

  • 03./03. [NSW] Super Mario Maker 2 (Nintendo) – 18.296 / 600.297 (-19%). It’s now sold over 600 000 units at retail alone since launch;
  • 05./04. [NSW] Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Nintendo) – 10.611 / 3.243.816 (-5%). Sales remaing strong following the release of the latest DLC set;
  • 06./02. [NSW] Astral Chain (Nintendo) – 9.129 / 41.365 (-72%). Pretty standard second week drop for this kind of game;
  • 07./06. [NSW] Fishing Spirits: Nintendo Switch Version (Bandai Namco Games) – 9.018 / 153.154 (-7%). Looks like the Nintendo Switch has another evergreen titles! It has now sold over 150 000 units at retail alone;
  • 08./05. [NSW] Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Nintendo) {2017.04.28} (¥5.980) – 8.850 / 2.440.455 (-9%). The 2.5 million units milestone is in sight!
  • 09./07. [NSW] Minecraft (Microsoft Game Studios) {2018.06.21} (¥3.600) – 8.221 / 915.471 (-12%). It should reach 1 million units sometime in November;
  • 10./08. [NSW] Fire Emblem: Three Houses (Nintendo) – 6.255 / 235.352 (-18%). The 250 000 units milestone at retal is fast approaching: it should be reached before the end of the month.

Famitsu – Hardware

During Week 35, Nintendo Switch saw a major increase in sales thanks to the release of the “new” Nintendo Switch model with improved battery life. Quite interestingly, the impact of that release can still be felt during Week 35; sales remained strong with 77 392 units sold. What’s more, that drop is partially due to shortages, the console becoming harder to find at some stores (though shortages are nowhere near as bad as they were throughout most of 2017).

At this point, it’s pretty safe to expect sales to remain strong in the foreseeable future, despite the upcoming launch of the Nintendo Switch Lite (which seemingly does not appeal to the same audience).

This week, sales only dropped by 13 000 units (90 000 units sold during Week 35), and they’re at a much higher level than last year during the same week (46 206 units) despite the lack of major new releases.

What’s more, an another milestone was reached ths week: the Nintendo Switch has now sold over 2 000 000 units in 2019 alone. In comparison, “only” 1 646 416 units were sold last year after the same amount of weeks, and the Nintendo Switch Lite isn’t even available yet! With the release of the Nintendo Switch Lite, the line-up for the next few months, and the usual sales trajectory during the second half of the year, it’s pretty safe to expect Nintendo’s console to sell over 4 million units this year alone.

So far, the Nintendo Switch has sold 8 920 340 units since launch. Sales will top 9 million units the very week the Nintendo Switch Lite is released, even though it won’t even need it to do so.

Nintendo 3DS sales remain anemic with 1 518 units this week (1 934 units during Week 35 and 6 888 units during the same week last year), 159 670 units this year (420 710 units last year after the same amount of weeks), and 24 464 634 units LTD).
