[Japan] Famitsu sales for Week 31, 2019 (July 29th – August 04th) [Top 30]

Here’s the latest sales report from Famitsu (and Media Create), covering Week 31, 2019 in Japan.

Famitsu

Week 31 was pretty quiet on the new releases front, and in fact, only one of them managed to get in the Top 10 Software from Famitsu: Omega Labyrinth Life. Crash Team Racing did not even chart, which means the best-selling version sold less than 6 339 units.

Omega Labyrinth Life sold 6 643 units at launch, with only the Nintendo Switch version charting. Unfortunately, we will have to wait for the Top 30 tomorrow to find out how much the PlayStation 4 version sold.

The audience for this kind of game is clearly on PlayStation 4, but the version for that platform is missing the “sexy” content from the previous games (only found in the Nintendo Switch version).

Therefore, it’s interesting that the Nintendo Switch version sold the most, even if the difference between the two may not be all that big. One thing’s for sure, this new game didn’t sell nearly as much as the previous two entries, which sold 24 000 and 22 000 units at launch respectively (the latter with 11 000 units for the PlayStation Vita and PlayStation 4 versions)

Next, here’s how the other games in the Top 10 Software from Famitsu fared this week:

  • 01./03. [NSW] Super Mario Maker 2 (Nintendo) – 36.486 / 454.569 (-4%). A great hold for the game, which will the 500 000 units milestone during Week 33 at the latest. It could even reach 600 000 units before the end of the month, if sales during Obon week (Week 33) are strong enough;
  • 02./01. [NSW] Fire Emblem: Three Houses (Nintendo) – 35.804 / 178.934 (-75%). An average drop for the second week, in line with the previous entries in the series. It will reach the 200 000 units milestone next week;
  • 03./02. [NSW] Fishing Spirits: Nintendo Switch Version (Bandai Namco Games) – 23.924 / 71.624 (-50%). A fairly solid drop for the second. It should enjoy strong sales during the next couple of weeks, and it should reach the 100 000 units milestone next week;
  • 05./07. [NSW] Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Nintendo) – 9.947 / 3.185.421 (+23%). The launch of the new DLC (Hero from the Dragon Quest series) and the start of the school holidays had a noticeable impact on sales;
  • 06./09. [NSW] Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Nintendo) – 8.994 / 2.389.407 (+15%). Strong sales became even stronger thanks to the start of the Summer holidays season;
  • 07./06. [NSW] Olympic Games Tokyo 2020: The Official Video Game (Sega) {2019.07.24} (¥4.990) – 8.311 / 17.736 (-12%). A surprisingly good drop for the second week, which confirms that first week sales did not tell the whole story for this game;
  • 08./11. [NSW] Minecraft (Microsoft Game Studios) – 7.634 / 867.243 (+7%). A game popular with kids was bound to get a bump during the Summer holidays season;
  • 10./10. [NSW] Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball (Konami) – 6.339 / 128.530 (-16%). A good hold for the game, which should end up selling over 150-200 000 units LTD.

With the new model in late August, and the Nintendo Switch Lite on the horizon, Nintendo Switch sales are still in some sort of limbo. They’re not exactly bad per se, it’s just that the console should be able to sell (much) more than the 36 613 units sold during Week 31 (down from 42 689 units in Week 30). In comparison, it sold 48 975 units during Week 31 2018, and even back then, sales could have been better.

Of course, those average sales are not going to matter much in the grand scheme of things, but it’s certainly disappointing to see the Nintendo Switch selling like that during one of the hottest periods of the year for video games sales in Japan.

So far, the Nintendo Switch has sold 1 740 000 units this year, which is a little under 350 000 units more than last year after the same amount of weeks (1 408 587 units). It’s highly unlikely 2018 sales are ever going to catch up, but the new Nintendo Switch model and the Nintendo Switch Lite certainly cannot come soon enough… The Nintendo Switch has now sold 8 626 649 units since launch.

As for the Nintendo 3DS, its sales are perfectly flat with 2 610 units sold (as opposed to 2 667 units the previous week, and 11 361 units during the same week last year). This brings YTD sales to 143 050 units (down from 376 499 units in 2018), and LTD sales to 24 448 014 units.
