[Japan] Famitsu sales for Week 3, 2020 (January 13 – January 19) [Top 30]

Here’s the latest sales report from Famitsu (and Media Create), covering Week 3, 2020 in Japan.

Famitsu

Week 3 saw the releases of a few games, but only one on Nintendo Switch: Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore. It’s off to a somewhat decent debut for a port of a Wii U game that didn’t really set the charts on fire when it launched, back in 2015. This Nintendo Switch version did slightly worse, with 18 797 units sold during the first 3 days (vs 4 days for the Wii U version).

Unfortunately, this performance is really nothing to write home about (quite the opposite), and it really shows the limited appeal of the game (even on a much popular platform). It will most likely be gone from the Top 30 altogether by next week, as the sales for this kind of niche JRPG are pretty much always concentrated on the first few days.

Other than that, nothing much happened this week, with the same familiar faces to be found in the Top 10 Software provided by Famitsu. Ring Fit Adventure saw its sales increase bt 67% due to bigger shipments (and yet, still not enough to fully meet demand… not by a long shot). Meanwhile, Brain Training for Nintendo Switch seems to be the next evergreen title on Nintendo Switch, with flat sales this week (15 790 units sold). It’s now sold over 100 000 units (107 698 units to be precise).

As for the other games in the Top 10, they all saw their sales drop this week, but said drop is more limited than Week 2 (the first post-holiday season week).

Famitsu – Hardware

This week again, Nintendo Switch sales dropped, but they remain quite strong with 96 458 units sold. In comparison, the console sold 71 672 units during the same week last year. This shows that anticipation for Animal Crossing: New Horizons is quite strong, because it’s certainly not because of Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore that sales are up Year on Year. Therefore, it’s pretty safe to expect sales to stay at a high level in the next few weeks, despite a lack of major games to really boost them.

YTD sales now stand at 500 000 (well, 497 586 units to be precise!), which is over 100 000 units more than last year after the same amount of weeks (380 506 units sold). Given the strong anticipation for the new Animal Crossing game, it’s pretty safe to expect the gap to keep widening during the next couple of months. LTD sales now stand at 11 881 017 units: the 12 million units milestone is in sight!

As for the Nintendo 3DS, sales finally dropped in the 3-digit zone, with 766 units sold (vs. 4 939 units during the same week last year). YTD sales now stand at 5 739 units (vs. 39 401 units last year after the same amount of weeks), and 24 502 053 units LTD.
