[Japan] Famitsu sales for Week 19, 2019 (May 6th – May 12th) [Top 30]

Here’s the latest sales report from Famitsu (and Media Create), covering Week 18, 2019 in Japan.

Week 19 is the first week after the infamous Golden Week, and sales always plummet back to more “normal” levels. Naturally, this year was no exception with drops generally ranging between -40% and -60%. Of course, the usual evergreen titles on Nintendo Switch keep enjoying strong sales, and in fact, if not for Days Gone, they would have taken up the full Top 10 from Famitsu.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is the only game that managed to sell over 10 000 units (and almost outsold Days Gone), despite sales dropping by 58%. However, it’s pretty clear that they will drop below that threshold next week! Total sales are now at 3 076 992 units.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Minecraft both sold similiar amounts: 8 431 units (-52%) for the former, and 8 255 units (-59%) for the latter. The upcoming period is pretty poor for video games sales, but you can be sure both games are going to keep enjoying strong sales nonetheless. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe will reach 2.3 million units next week (2 295 735 units sold as of this week), and Minecraft will reach the 3 million units milestone in early June (776 378 units of as Week 19).

Finally, New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe sold 7 274 units during Week 19, which is 62% less than during the Golden Week. It will be interesting to see whether the full reveal of Super Mario Maker 2 is going to have any impact (positive or negative) on the sales of this game. The initial announcement did not, so it’s certainly possible there will not be any significant change next week.

Next, let’s take a look at how the other games in the Top 5 from Famitsu are faring:

  • 06./07. [NSW] Pokemon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! / Let’s Go, Eevee! (Pokemon Co.) – 6.098 / 1.524.756 <80-100%> (-57%). Expected post-Golden Week drop. Still hanging around in the Top 30 Software, and there’s no doubt the lack of news regarding Pokémon Sword and Shield is helping sales a fair bit;
  • 07./10. [NSW] The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Nintendo) – 5.709 / 1.314.946 <80-100%> (-46%). It just keeps on selling!
  • 08./06. [NSW] Yoshi’s Crafted World (Nintendo) – 5.598 / 130.744 <60-80%> (-63%). Sell-through indicate retailers still have a large amount of unsold copies, but there’s no doubt they will be able to clear them all out without resorting to price drops;
  • 09./09. [NSW] Splatoon 2 (Nintendo) – 5.105 / 3.063.187 <80-100%> (-58%). Sales nearly dropped below the 5 000 units/week threshold;
  • 10./08. [NSW] Super Mario Party (Nintendo) – 5.037 / 1.025.137 <80-100%> (-62%). Just like all the other family-friendly games in the Top 30 Software, the end of the Golden Week did quite a number on its sales.
