[Japan] Famitsu sales for Week 14, 2020 (March 30 – April 05) [Top 30]

Here’s the latest sales report from Famitsu (and Media Create), covering Week 14, 2020 in Japan.

Famitsu

This week again, Animal Crossing: New Horizons is #1 of sales and by a wide margin: it sold 423 367 units, which is over 2 times better than the Resident Evil 3 remake at #2. Despite shortages during the weekend, sales only dropped by 42%, which is really good for the third week of a game that has already sold over 3 million units since launch (3 031 784 units to be precise)… and that’s only including retail sales.

Unfortunately, shortages are only getting worse, and it looks like retail sales are going to take a nosedive during Week 15. But even without shortages, this would the last week at the top of the charts (for now at least) for the game, as the remake of a certain popular JRPG is releasing this week.

It’s not clear just how high sales will go for Animal Crossing: New Horizons, but what we do know is that it will not take much longer for it to outsell Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Pokémon Sword and Shield.

Other than that, the usual evergreen titles performed well, with sales either significantly up (Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate) or slightly down (Minecraft). There’s a couple of exceptions, though: Pokémon Sword and Shield and Ring Fit Adventure. For the latter, it’s once again shortages that are holding it back (yes, demand is still nowhere to be met).

Speaking of Ring Fit Adventure, it’s now sold over 750 000 units (753 623 units to be precise), not counting units sold on the My Nintendo Store (not tracked by Famitsu).

During its second week on the market, One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4 sold over 35 000 units, with 17 340 units on Nintendo Switch alone. The gap is fairly slim now, and it’s expected the Nintendo Switch version will start outselling the PlayStation 4 version as early as next week. Both versions combined have sold over 163 000 units since launch, with 78 911 units on Nintendo Switch.

Once again, Nintendo Switch sales are down, which was expected after Week 12 and 13 that were much better than most anticipated. Unfortunately, the drop is going to be even worse during Week 15, as Nintendo have already warned there would be no shipments outside pre-orders/lotteries at retailers (meaning no units available in stores). We don’t know how many units will be available via those lotteries, but the very fact that they will be the only way to buy one indicates quantities are going to be extremely limited.

The Nintendo Switch sold 154 640 units this week, which is a really impressive performance: it’s really unusual for a console to sell that much outside a holiday season or launch weeks. In comparison, the console sold 282 561 units last week, and 46 850 units during the same week last year: that’s a +200% increase Year on Year!

Last year, the Nintendo Switch reached its first million during Week 14 (1 016 073 units to be precise), and this year, its about to reach its second one with 1 854 992 units. Unfortunately, shortages are going to delay that second million by a few weeks; it could have reached it as early as Week 15 if not for them!

Since launch, the console has already sold over 13 238 423 units, with 2 109 557 units for the Nintendo Switch Lite, and 11 126 866 units for the OG model. Speaking of the Lite model, it’s the very one responsible for the drop in sales; the OG model fared rather well, thanks to the new shipments of the Animal Crossing: New Horizons bundle.

As for the Nintendo 3DS, sales went back in the 4 digits territory, with 1 230 units sold this week (vs. 940 units the previous week, and 4 388 units during the same week last year). The handheld has now sold 16 400 units this year (vs. 90 888 units last year after the same amount of weeks), and 24 512 547 units LTD.
