[Japan] Famitsu sales for Week 10, 2020 (March 02 – March 08) [Top 30]

Here’s the latest sales report from Famitsu (and Media Create), covering Week 10, 2020 in Japan.

Famitsu

Week 10 was a relatively quiet week, with just one new game in the Top 10 Software from Famitsu. That game is Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX, which knocks Pokémon Sword and Shield off the #1 spot with 138 548 units sold. That’s a fairly good debut for this remake of the original Pokémon Mystery Dungeon game, released on GameBoy Advance and Nintendo DS.

This debut is in line with the past two entries on Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo DS:

  • Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky (Nintendo DS): 142 264 units at launch, 448 025 units LTD
  • Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity (Nintendo 3DS): 125 911 units at launch, 403 969 units LTD

Considering Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX is a remake, and not a brand new game, it’s a really positive sign it managed to sell as much as the past two entries at launch (especially when you take digital sales into account). It should have no trouble outselling both when it comes to LTD sales. Of course, it’s never going to sell as much as the original version of the game, which ended up selling a combined 1.5 million units!

This week, sales were mostly stable for the usual evergreen titles on Nintendo Switch, though a few of them did see their sales drop: Pokémon Sword and Shield and Brain Training for Nintendo Switch being the two big culprits. Speaking of Pokémon, it will reach another milestone next week: 3.5 million units (and that’s not counting digital sales!). It’s getting ever nearer to the LTD sales of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (3 .592 374 at retail as of this week).

Finally, Splatoon 2 is back in the Top 10 with 7 293 units sold this week (+7%). It’s slowly but surely making its way to the 3.5 million units milestone at retail.

This week, Nintendo Switch sales once again dropped, but fortunately the drop is rather limited with 50 585 units sold (vs. 53 098 units the previous week). The Lite Model is the one that saved the day, with 46 161 units sold (+8 000 units), while the OG model saw its sales collapse from 15 314 units to 4 424 units. Shortages are doing a real number on Nintendo Switch sales, and unfortunately, it’s going to take a little while before things go back to normal.

Once again, sales are down Year on Year (the console sold 67 624 units during the same week last year), even though they should be (massively) up thanks to strong anticipation for Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

The gap between 2020 and 2019 keeps getting smaller, though the launch of Animal Crossing is going to provide a healthy respite (what with the special bundle and the new Nintendo Switch Lite colour launching on the same day). Unfortunately, it’s unlikely production and shipments will have gone back to normal by the end of the month…

The Nintendo Switch has now sold 967 941 units this year alone (vs. 807 081 units last year after the same amount of weeks), and the 1 million milestone should be reached next week (unless sales really drop a lot, which is certainly possible: Nintendo will want as many units available for the launch of Animal Crossing: New Horizons).

Since launch, the Nintendo Switch has sold 12 351 372 units, with 10 881 146 units for the OG model, and 1 470 226 units for the Lite model.

As for the Nintendo 3DS, its sales are once again flat, with 1 297 units sold this week (vs. 1 131 units last week, 4 276 units during the same week last year). YTD sales now stand at 11 846 units (vs. 69 966 units last year), and 24 507 993 units LTD.
