Japan: Famitsu sales for September 2018 (August 27th to September 30th, 2018)

Today, Famitsu shared their monthly report on video game sales in Japan. Today, the data we have covers September 2018, and more precisely the period going from August 27th to September 30th (so 5 weeks in total).

Famitsu – Software

In September, and for the first time in a long while, the majority of games in the Top 5 Software are not on Nintendo platforms. In fact, there’s only one such game: Splatoon 2 (on Nintendo Switch), which sold 77 043 units in September alone.

September is a much quiet period for the Japanese market (compared to July and August), especially for Nintendo platforms, so it’s no wonder some of this month’s new releases were able to get in the Top 5 Software without too much trouble.

It’s also quite remarkable that Splatoon 2 was also able to do so, despite launching more than a year ago. That being said, it’s also a sign of how weak-ish the market has been lately. After all, two of the 5 games in the Top 5 did not sell 100 000 units.

Here’s the Top 5 Software for September in Japan:

01./00. [PS4] Marvel’s Spider-Man # <ADV> (Sony Interactive Entertainment) {2018.09.07} (¥6.900) – 258.716 / NEW

PS4 – 4
NSW – 1

The usual evergreen titles on Nintendo Switch were not able to show up in the Top 5 Software, but that’s not because they stopped selling… quite the opposite After all, Nintendo was once again the most successful publisher with 403 000 units sold in total, despite not launching any major titles in September!

Here’s the Top 3 publishers for September in Japan:

  1. Nintendo: 403 000 units sold
  2. Sony Interactive Entertainment: 303 000 units sold
  3. Koei-Tecmo: 168 000 units sold

Famitsu – Hardware

The Nintendo Switch may have not been able to have more than one game in the Top 5 Software this month, Hardware sales remained strong and steady. The console sold 203 432 units, which is more than in August (when it sold 199 473 units). This increase isn’t all that noteworthy, since it’s mostly due to the fact that the data for September covers 5 weeks, as opposed to 4 weeks for August.

The Nintendo Switch was the best-selling console once again, and by a wide margin. Famitsu also point out that the Nintendo Switch finally hit the 5 million units sold milestone in September.
