[Japan] Famitsu sales for March 2024 (Top 10 Software, Publishers, Hardware)

Here’s the latest sales report from Famitsu, with Hardware and Software sales for March 2024 in Japan (February 26th to March 31st, so 5 weeks in total).

Famitsu

Top 5 Software

Princess Peach: Showtime! is one of two Nintendo Switch releases that managed to find their way in the Top 5 Software in March with over 100,000 units sold in less than two weeks. A strong debut that bodes well for Good-Feel’s latest game, especially if its sales follow the same trajectory as most first-party releases on Nintendo Switch.

Unsurprisingly, Princess Peach: Showtime! sold a lot better than the previous game featuring Princess Peach as the protagonist: Super Princess Peach on Nintendo DS, which sold only 49,000 units during the first two weeks.

As for Unicorn Overlord, it’s also off to a strong start with over 60,000 units sold on Nintendo Switch during its launch month.

Unfortunately, both Atlus and retailers were caught unprepared by the game’s success, leading to massive shortages that started impacting the Nintendo Switch version shortly after launch. Said shortages got so bad that during the last week of March (March 25th to March 31st), this version of the game sold a measly 305 units! All versions combined sold over 110,000 units.

Famitsu points out that it’s the first time in 2 years and 5 months that the Top 5 Software is made entirely of new releases.

Publishers

Once again, Nintendo was the most successful publisher in Japan with over 500,000 units sold. Princess Peach: Showtime! did contribute to that number, but most of sales come from the usual evergreen titles. As for Atlus, it ranked #3 thanks to Unicorn Overlord and its strong debut on all platforms.

  1. Nintendo: 521,000
  2. Square-Enix: 387,000
  3. Atlus: 133,000

Hardware

Hardware-wise, Nintendo Switch sales saw a noticeable increase compared to February, which is only partially due to the tracking period for March having 5 weeks instead of 4. With nearly 290,000 units sold, the Nintendo Switch is exhibiting unusual longetivity for a console on its 8th year on the market!
