NB: Nintendo Dream appears to have stopped sharing monthly Media Create data, so those posts are back to Famitsu-only sales numbers.

Top 5 Software

April was a fairly slow month for the Japanese video games market, with not a single game in the Top 5 Software selling even 100 000 units. The only entry is the Nintendo Switch version of Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection, which sold a respectable 64 000 units. It outsold the PlayStation 4 version by a wide margin: that version ranks #24 with about 10 000 units sold.

As for Kirby’s Return to Dream Land Deluxe, it was the best-selling game for the 3rd month in a row. Meanwhile, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet reached the 5 million units milestone at retail alone about 5.5 months after launch. It’s the 4th Nintendo Switch game to do so. Will The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom become the 5th one?

Publishers

Quite interestingly, the publishers Top 3 is the exact same as in March 2023, though sales are slightly lower. Koei-Tecmo saw the biggest drop in sales from 166 000 units sold to just 78 000 units sold. Nintendo is still #1 with 365 000 units sold, with most of the sales coming from the usual evergreen titles. Capcom only saw a small drop in sales (from 190.000 units sold to 178.000 units sold) thanks to the strong performance of the Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection.

  1. Nintendo: 365.000 units sold
  2. Capcom: 178.000 units sold
  3. Koei-Tecmo: 78.000 units sold
Hardware

Hardware-wise, the Nintendo Switch saw a noticeable bump in sales with 337 464 units sold (roughly +100 000 units compared to March) thanks to the combined effects of the Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom model, the start of the Golden Week, and anticipation for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. May is usually a slow month for sales, but with the new Zelda game in town, that month is going to be anything but slow!

  • Nintendo Switch: 337.464 units sold (vs. 230.664 units in March 2023)
  • PlayStation 5: 215.561 units sold (vs. 222.656 units in March 2023)
