Japan: Famitsu sales for July 2021 (Software, Hardware, Publishers)

Famitsu have shared their latest monthly report on video game sales in Japan, this time covering July 2021 (to be more precise, the period going from June 28th to July 25th, so 4 weeks in total).

Last month, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD was the best-selling game with over 200 000 units sold at retail (201 731 units to be precise). It’s a strong opening for the game, especially if you add the equally strong digital sales to the total. This remaster should have no trouble outselling the original on Wii when all is said and done.

Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin is #2 with 185 804 units sold. A fairly solid debut, sadly hampered by shortages. Fortunately for Capcom, digital sales were quite strong (the game topped digital sales in July).

As for eBaseball Pro Yakyuu Spirits 2021: Grand Slam, it’s off to a solid debut with 142 040 units sold at retail. Unfortunately, it’s nowhere near as good as the previous entry, and it will need strong sales in the long run to compensate for the drop in launch month sales.

Finally, Crayon Shin-chan: Ora to Hakase no Natsuyasumi – Owaranai Nanokakan no Tabi is off to a surprisingly (but not entirely unexpectedly) strong debut with 130 134 units sold at retail (best debut ever for a Crayon Shin-chan game). Both Neos and retailers underestimated demand for the game, and as a result, it was severely undershipped. It was particularly hard to find in stores during the second and third week.

For once, the Top 5 Software is dominated by new releases, and all of them sold over 100 000 units. Famitsu point out that it’s the first time since November 2020 that the Top 3 games are all new releases.

Here’s the Top 5 Software for July 2021:

01./00. [NSW] The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD <ADV> (Nintendo) {2021.07.16} (¥5.980) – 201.731 / NEW

05./02. [NSW] Mario Golf: Super Rush <SPT> (Nintendo) {2021.06.25} (¥5.980) – 69.754 / 150.184 (-13%)

As you can see, the Nintendo Switch managed to grab all 5 spots in the Top 5 Software this month (and it’s highly likely August will be the same):

NSW – 5

In July, Nintendo was once again the most successful publisher with 689 000 units sold. The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD accounts for a good chunk of those sales, but as usual, the evergreen titles performed quite well.

Capcom is #2 of sales with 226 000 units sold, that come almost exclusively from Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin and Monster Hunter Rise. Finally, Konami is #3 with 192 000 units sold, thanks to eBaseball Pro Yakyuu Spirits 2021: Grand Slam and Momotaro Dentetsu: Showa, Heisei, Reiwa mo Teiban! (which is quite simply unstoppable!).

  1. Nintendo – 689 000 units sold
  2. Capcom – 226 000 units sold
  3. Konami – 192 000 units sold

Hardware-wise, Nintendo Switch dropped even further to 287 622 units (compared to 323 553 units in June); a drop that would have been not quite as notable had Famitsu counted Week 31 as part of July. Sales would have also dropped Year on Year even with 5 weeks tracked for July 2021. The Nintendo Switch is still selling extremely well, but it’s pretty clear it cannot compete against the might of Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
