[Japan] Famitsu sales for CY 2019 (Top 100 Software, Hardware)
In its latest issue, Famitsu magazine share their latest report on video games sales in Japan, this time covering CY 2019 (December 31st 2018 to December 29th 2019 to be precise).
Unsurprisingly, Pokémon Sword and Shield is the best-selling game by a wide margin, with nearly 3 million units sold at retail (2 988 134 units to be precise). It’s far ahead of the game ranked #2, which is none other than Super Smash Bros. Ultimate… which was released in 2018, yet went and sold over 1 million units. In fact, it’s the only other million-seller this year, all the 2019 didn’t manage to reach that threshold.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is just one of the many Nintendo Switch evergreen titles from 2018 and 2017 in the Top 20, and they were joined by a fresh batch in 2019 (including 3rd-party titles like Tsuri Spirits Nintendo Switch Version, which sold 336 995 units).
Overall, the market is still relatively weak: only 8 games sold more than 500 000 units, and more than half of the games in the Top 100 (55 to be precise) did not even sell 100 000 units. The gap between the best-selling games and the rest keeps widening.

This year, the Nintendo Switch is the platform with the most games in the Top 100 provided by Famitsu, though with only 1 more than the PlayStation 4. The Nintendo 3DS and the PS Vita are left with (quite literally) scraps.

Hardware-wise, the domination of the Nintendo Switch is even clearer with 4 493 885 units sold; that’s more than 3 times what all the other consoles combined sold. What’s more, sales noticeably increased in 2019, with over 1 million units more compared to 2018. If Animal Crossing: New Horizons had not been delayed to 2020, there’s little doubt the console would have managed to sell over 5 million units in 2019. Of course, that’s no big deal for Nintendo: that simply means 2020 will be better!
Since launch, the Nintendo Switch has sold over 11 million units: 11 383 431 units to be precise, with 1 045 383 units for the Lite model, and 3 448 502 units for the OG model. While the Lite model was constantly outsold by the OG model with the exception of a few weeks, it still managed to sell over a million units. It will certainly be interesting to watch how the two models perform this year, especially with the inevitable new colours and bundles.
As expected, Nintendo 3DS dropped sharply in 2019, with only 191 350 units sold (down from 566 420 units last year). There’s little doubt the handheld will not even manage to sell over 100 000 units this year, especially as Nintendo is bound to announce its discontinuation within the next few months. The Nintendo 3DS sold 24 496 314 units as of December 29th 2019.
