[Japan] Famitsu sales for August 2023 (Top 5 Software, Publishers, Hardware)

Here’s the latest sales report from Famitsu, with Hardware and Software sales for August 2023 in Japan (July 31st to August 27th 2023, so 4 weeks in total).

Famitsu

Top 5 Software

Just like in July, Pikmin 4 was the best-selling game in August in Japan. It sold over 235 000 units, which is a fairly strong performance after the record-breaking debut in July (517,550 units sold). There’s little doubt the game will keep enjoying strong sales throughout the rest of the year, and especially during the upcoming holiday season.

Speaking of Pikmin 4, it’s already outsold Pikmin 3 Deluxe (660.000 units sold), and has therefore become the best-selling entry in the series!

As for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, it sales actually went slightly up in August (despite Famitsu’s tracking period covering only 4 weeks, as opposed to 5 weeks for July). Sales went up from 51,000 units to 57,000 units, which bodes well for the rest of the year (what with the final wave of DLC and the holiday season).

Finally, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom sold a little under 51,000, which brings total sales even closer to the 2 million units milestone.

Publishers

Once again, Nintendo was the most successful publisher in Japan with over 600 000 units sold in August. That’s quite the drop compared to July (over 1 million units sold), but not too surprising given the lack of new releases (and July having one extra week compared to August). Sales remain quite strong, and it’s quite likely Nintendo will remain the #1 publisher in Japan during the rest of the year.

Pikmin 4 accounts for a good chunk of those 600 000 units sold, with the usual evergreen titles making up the rest.

As for The Pokémon Company, it lands at #3 with 42.000 units sold. Most of those sales come from Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.

  1. Nintendo: 600.000 units sold
  2. From Software: 165.000 units sold
  3. The Pokémon Company: 42.000 units sold

Hardware

Hardware-wise, August was another strong month for the Nintendo Switch with no less than 334.436 units sold. That’s not as much as in July (407.096 units sold), but as mentioned above, Famitsu’s tracking period for August has only 4 weeks (as opposed to 5 in July). If you add sales from the “missing” week (83.222 units), then sales are actually up compared to July.

  1. Nintendo Switch: 334.436 units sold in August (407.096 units sold in July)
  2. PlayStation 5: 181.361 units sold in August (243.383 units sold in July)
