Japan: more data for Week 31, Etrian Odyssey V, DB Fusions, more (Media Create, Dengeki)

Media Create

Today, Media Create released its weekly report for video game sales in Japan, providing us with more sales data for Week 31. During that week, a total of 525 000 units were sold for Software, which amounts to 89.04% of Week 30 sales. That slight drop is mainly due to new releases.

Despite two popular new entries, sales of new releases are down Week on Week. During Week 31, they only amount to 75.83% of Week 30 sales (which saw more releases, so the drop isn’t all that surprising).

Media Creates notes that during Week 31, there was an increase in sales for previously released titles on Nintendo 3DS (due to the Summer holidays demand). That’s why sales of games released before Week 31 increased (101.36% of previously-released titles sales during Week 30).

Overall, total Software sales remained above the 500 000 units threshold for yet another week.

Next, we have more data for Etrian Odyssey V, the latest entry in the Etrian Odyssey series. It sold pretty well, in line with Etrian Odyssey IV: about 93 000 units (sell through ratio: 75.84%). In comparison, its predecessor sold about 76 000 units during the first four days, with an amusingly similar sell through ratio: 75.68%.

But as explained in this post, you also have to take into account digital sales, especially since Etrian Odyssey V dominated sales on the Nintendo eShop during its launch week. It’s extremely likely that it actually opened higher than Etrian Odyssey IV, which didn’t have a digital version at launch.

As for the other Nintendo 3DS release of the week mentioned by Media Create, Dragon Ball Fusions, it sold about 78 000 units durings its launch week. That’s slightly better than Dragon Ball Extreme Butoden, which sold about 75% units at launch. This one sold over 150 000 units, so Media Create expects Dragon Ball Fusions to sell at least as much.

Dengeki

Dengeki gives us an update on Yo-kai Watch 3 sales:

  • Sushi: 32 681 units during Week 31, 480 270 units since launch
  • Tempura: 30 600 units during Week 31, 452 522 units since launch

As for Dragon Ball Fusions, it sold about 76 000 units according to Dengeki, with a decent sell-through ratio: 60%. That’s better than both Dragon Ball Ultimate Mission 2 (73 000 units at launch, 277 000 units in total) and Dragon Ball Extreme Butoden (72 000 units at launch, 174 000 units in total).

Next, Dengeki shares some data for the first 7 months of 2016, and there’s some pretty bad news… As a whole, the market is down by almost 20% so far, with:

  • Hardware: 85 billion Yen (-17.2% Year on Year)
  • Software: 140 billion Yen (-19.6%)
  • Total: 225 billion Yen (-18.7%)

Unfortunately, Nintendo platforms are (mostly) the one to blame for these drops:

  • PlayStation 4: 6.9 billion Yen (+48.3%)
  • Nintendo 3DS: 9.1 billion Yen (-36.8%)
  • Wii U: 2.3 billion Yen (-32.3%)

Finally, here’s the best-selling titles FOR jULY 2016/

  1. [3DS] Yo-kai Watch 3 – 869 000 units
  2. [PS3 / PS4] Super Robot Taisen OG: The Moon Dwellers – 131 000 units
  3. [PS3 / PS4 / PSV] Toukiden 2 – 104 000 units
  4. [3DS] Puzzle & Dragons X – 78 000 units
