[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 31, 2016 (August 1st – 7th) [Top 50]

Update: full Top 50 for Media Create added, along with sell-through ratio for Etrian Odyssey V!

Media Create – Software

During Week 31, several games came out in Japan, including a few Nintendo 3DS titles. The best-selling title is Etrian Odyssey V, which is off to a great start with 92 518 units sold. According to Famitsu (which reports slightly lower sales), this amounts to 60-80% of all units shipped to retailers for Day 1. Given the usual sale trajectory, retailers should not have any trouble selling the remaining units.

Here’s how the previous Etrian Odyssey games sold (courtesy of Chris1964):

[NDS] Etrian Odyssey (Atlus) {2007.01.18} – 32.511 / 94.951 <85,00%>
[NDS] Etrian Odyssey II (Atlus) {2008.02.21} – 68.913 / 134.347 <59,57%>
[NDS] Etrian Odyssey III (Atlus) {2010.04.01} – 87.765 / 141.899 <74,75%>
[3DS] Etrian Odyssey IV (Atlus) {2012.07.05} – 95.506 / 157.483 <75,68%>
[3DS] Etrian Odyssey Untold (Atlus) {2013.06.27} – 88.278 / 129.704 <67,15%>
[3DS] Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold (Atlus) {2014.11.27} – 59.531 / 78.382 <67,64%>
[3DS] Etrian Odyssey V (Atlus) {2016.08.04} – 92.518

We can see that Etrian Odyssey V has sold pretty much on par with Etrian Odyssey IV (which had the best debut in the series). But there’s one thing to keep in mind: Media Create does not track digital sales. Taking those into account, it’s safe to assume that Etrian Odyssey V actually opened higher than its predecessor, especially since it was the best-seller on the Nintendo eShop last week.

The Etrian Odyssey series has been doing pretty well on Nintendo 3DS (with the exception of Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold, which underperformed), which is not too surprising since the audience for this kind of game is generally pretty loyal. For Etrian Odyssey V in particular, the game looks like a significant improvement over its predecessor (especially in the customisation department), so good sales were expected.

It will be interesting to see where total sales for Etrian Odyssey V end up when everything is said and done.

The second entry of the week on Nintendo 3DS is Dragon Ball Fusions, which had a pretty decent opening with 77 509 units according to Media Create. That’s about 60-80% of all units shipped to retailers, according to Famitsu, which is a pretty positive result. With the Summer holidays in full swing, along with the Dragon Ball Super anime series on TV, sales should remain steady during the next few weeks.

Here’s how the other Dragon Ball games opened on Nintendo 3DS (Famitsu data, courtesy of Games Data Library):

  • Dragon Ball Heroes: Ultimate Mission – 90.119 units at launch, 299.001 units in total
  • Dragon Ball: Fusions – 81.548 units at launch
  • Dragon Ball Heroes: Ultimate Mission 2 – 70.832 units at launch, 219.993 units in total
  • Dragon Ball Z: Extreme Butoden – 68.398 units at launch, 154.871 units in total

Dragon Ball Fusions had the second best opening for the series on Nintendo 3DS, which is pretty good news for Bandai-Namco (especially if sales remain steady). It looks like the game being a RPG resonated better with Japanese players, though it’s probably better to see how the game sells in the upcoming weeks/months before making any conclusion.

The third and last entry of the week on Nintendo 3DS is 12-sai ~Koisuru Diary~, which sold 14 803 units during the first four days (sell through ratio from Famitsu: 40-60%). That’s pretty much in line with the previous game, which sold about 16 000 units during launch week according to Famitsu. It’s nothing to write home about, especially the sell through ratio, but still a rather decent debut.

Next, we have Yo-kai Watch 3, which sold about 36 000 units this week (-36%): it should easily reach 1 million units by the end of Week 32 (and therefore, during the first month). Right now, the game is standing at 965 202 units sold since launch according to Media Create. Sales may be a disappointment compared to Yo-kai Watch 2 and Yo-kai Watch Busters, they’re still relatively good.

The same definitely cannot be said of Puzzle & Dragons X, which sold 20 870 units during its second week. The week on week drop is 76%, which is pretty usual for a RPG… but the problem is that first week sales were not very good to begin with. Total sales have topped 108 380 units, and it doesn’t look likely the game will reach 200 000 units any time soon (if at all…).

And now, let’s take a look at how some popular Summer games are faring…

  • 08./07. [3DS] Kirby: Planet Robobot (Nintendo) – 11.856 / 379.471 (+6%). Sales remain strong, as expected. It will reach 400 000 units sold by the end of the month, and 500 000 units LTD look like a lock;
  • 10./08. [3DS] Pokémon Omega Ruby / Alpha Sapphire (Pokémon Co.) – 10.432 / 2.851.648 (+2%). The Pokémon GO effect is still visible, and allow this 2014 game to sell over 10 000 units in the middle of Summer 2016 (and without any major discount);
  • 11./09. [WIU] Minecraft: Wii U Edition (Microsoft Game Studios) – 6.631 / 73.304 (-10%). Sales remains steady, which is not something you see often for a Wii U game;
  • 13./13. [WIU] Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games (Nintendo) – 6.302 / 65.397 (+11%). Sales increased this week, due to the Summer holidays and the start of the io 2016 Olympics. The Nintendo 3DS version saw a bigger increase, with +26% (5.562 units sold this week / 206.148 units sold in total);
  • 16./17. [WIU] Splatoon (Nintendo) – 6.025 / 1.440.010 (+76%). Splatoon saw a major increase this week, which is most likely due to Media Create rectifying their data. After all, last week’s sales were surprisingly low with only 3 424 units.

Talking of Pokémon, the sales of the Virtual Console games at retail are still pretty strong:

10./06. [3DS] Pokemon Red / Green / Blue / Yellow (Pokemon Co.) – 10.690 / 239.521 <80-100%> (-22%)

Finally, we have Sumikko Gurashi: Mura o Tsukurundesu that’s about to leave the Top 20, after selling 32 941 units since launch (5 164 units this week, -28%).

Hardware-wise, there’s something pretty interesting to note about the Nintendo 3DS: total sales have reached 21 million units since launch! Nintendo’s handheld is by far the best-selling platform this generation in Japan, but it’s still far below its predecessor, the Nintendo DS (over 31 million units sold).

In the upcoming months, the Nintendo 3DS will outsell the PlayStation 2, and become the third best-selling platform of all times in Japan. Will it manage to outsell the GameBoy too? We’ll see that next year! The Nintendo 3DS could reach 22 million units this very year, but for that, it would need to sell at least 47 000 units/week until the end of the year (which is going to be pretty tough, especially outside out holiday weeks…).

Talking of total sales, we can also note the following:

  • the New Nintendo 3DS XL recently reached 3 million units sold (it’s currently sitting at 3.088.620 units sold);
  • the New Nintendo 3DS is closing in on the first million (currently sitting at 972.634 units sold), and it’s definitely going to reach that within the next couple of months;
  • the original Nintendo 3DS XL has almost sold 7 million units (it’s currently sitting at 6.954.373 units sold), but since weekly sales are pretty slow (219 units this week), it will most likely never reach that;
  • the original Nintendo 3DS has almost sold 10 million units (it’s currently sitting at 9.997.937 units sold), and it should reach that before the end of the month.

This week, the Nintendo 3DS sold 31 549 units according to Media Create: that’s slightly better than last week, in part due to the Dragon Ball Fusions + New Nintendo 3DS + cover plates bundle. Looking at separate sales for each model, we can see only the New Nintendo 3DS was significantly up this week compared to Week 30.

The drop compared to the same week last year is slightly better this week (31 549 units vs 39 008 units), due to sales dropping in August 2015, following the release of Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer.

As for the Wii U, there’s nothing special to note abouyt it. Sales dropped to 4 435 units this week according to Media Create. The Summer holidays should have a bigger impact on sale, but it looks like the price of the Splatoon bundle isn’t doing the Wii U any favours. The total lack of new releases (there is literally nothing until September, and Wii U version of Terraria) doesn’t help either!
