Japan: more data for Week 23, 2016, Ace Attorney: Spirit of Justice, New N3DS XL colours

Today, Media Create released its weekly report for video game sales in Japan, providing us with more sales data for Week 23. During that week, a total of 447 000 units were sold for Software, which is 134.26% of Week 22 sales. Previously released games sold less this week, with 230 000 units for Week 23 (as opposed to 327 000 units for Week 22).

As for Hardware, about 62 000 units were sold: that’s slightly better than Week 22 (106.90%), in part due to the new colours for the New Nintendo 3DS XL. The two new colours sold about 10 000 units, according to Media Create.

New 3DS XLNext, we have Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice, which sold about 197 000 during the first week. As comparison, the previous entry (Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Dual Destinies) sold about 250 000 units during its first week, so that’s a ~20% drop for the latest Ace Attorney game.

That being said, more people pre-ordered Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice:

  • Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice: 129 000 units for pre-orders
  • Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Dual Destinies: 121 000 units for pre-orders

In other words, more people pre-ordered the game (fans of the series), but less people bought it at launch without pre-ordering (players who might not necessarily be fans of the series, or at least don’t regularly buy new entries). N

This is a pretty disappointing result given how much Capcom has been pushing the game, with the Ace Attorney anime series, the TV commercials, and the promotional campaigns. Those were targeted at people who don’t regularly buy Ace Attorney games (if they ever did in the past), and it looks like they were not very effective. Now it remains to see how sales will hold up in the upcoming weeks, what with the anime series airing until October.

The release of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Spirit of Justice had a pretty positive impact on the sales: the game was at #48 for Week 22, and it’s at #24 for Week 23.

Finally, first-day shipment data for two Nintendo 3DS games:

  • Taiko Drum Master: Dokodon! Mystery Adventure: a little under 20% (small shipment)
  • Kouenji Joshi Soccer 3: ~20%
