Japan: 3DS Software sales top 100 million units, Pokémon Sun and Moon up from X/Y (Media Create)

Nintendo 3DS

Yesterday, along with its usual weekly report for the video game market in Japan, Famitsu shared a pretty interesting tidbit about the Nintendo 3DS. They revealed that total Software sales have topped 100 million units* since launch, back in February 2011. They note that only two platforms have managed to accomplish that feat in the past 20 years: the Nintendo DS and the PlayStation 2.

While the Nintendo 3DS saw a significant drop in sales compared to its predecessor (both Hardware and Software), it still managed to sell a lot of consoles and games in a significantly troubled market, under the increasingly overwhelming influence of smart devices.

Pokémon Sun and Moon

Earlier this week, Famitsu reported that Pokémon Sun and Moon had sold 1 905 107 units during the first three days (retail + dual-pack + download cards), which is slightly down from Pokémon X and Y (2 096 000 units during the first two days).

Well, it turns out that things are a bit different with Media Create, who reports the following sales for Pokémon Sun and Moon:

01./00. [3DS] Pokemon Sun / Moon <RPG> (Pokemon Co.) {2016.11.18} (¥4.980) – 1.590.629 / NEW
02./00. [3DS] Pokemon Sun / Moon (Pokemon Sun / Moon Dual Pack) <RPG> (Pokemon Co.) {2016.11.18} (¥9.960) – 151.379 / NEW
Total: 1 742 008 (if units from dual-pack are counted as 1 unit) / 1.893.387 (if units from dual-pack are counted as 2 units).

In other words, if we count the dual-pack as 2 units (one for Pokémon Sun, and one for Pokémon Moon), then Pokémon Sun and Moon’s debut was actually slightly better than Pokémon X and Y’s in 2013 (1.866.570), and would be the second best opening ever for a Pokémon game (far behind Pokémon Black & White):

[3DS] Pokemon X / Y # <RPG> (Pokemon Co.) {2013.10.12} (¥4.800) – 1.866.570
[3DS] Pokemon Omega Ruby / Alpha Sapphire # <RPG> (Pokemon Co.) {2014.11.21} (¥4.937) – 1.508.665
[NDS] Pokemon Pearl / Diamond <RPG> (Pokemon Co.) {2006.09.28} (¥4.800) – 1.588.734
[NDS] Pokemon Heart Gold / Soul Silver <RPG> (Pokemon Co.) {2009.09.12} (¥4.800) – 1.442.990
[NDS] Pokemon Black / White <RPG> (Pokemon Co.) {2010.09.18} (¥4.800) – 2.557.779
[NDS] Pokemon Black 2 / White 2 <RPG> (Pokemon Co.) {2012.06.23} (¥4.800) – 1.561.738

Now all that remains is to see the data from Dengeki, who lists both versions separately.
