Nintendo have shared a developer blog post for Röki, where Alex Kanaris-Sotirou explains how the characters of the came to life.

Here’s an excerpt:

Early in the game’s development, before any hands-on work had begun, we tried to consider Röki’s cast of characters and creatures as an ensemble. There is a danger in designing characters in isolation, as they may end up with unintentionally similar visual traits to each other that makes them hard to distinguish. By designing them as a cast of characters rather than individuals, we could make sure they differed from each other and visually worked well as a group.
