ABOUT MARTYR MODE

Martyr Mode is our version of an ultra-challenging, endgame mode with randomization, customization, and scoreboards. In it, players build a deck of Challenge Cards in order to apply challenging new rules to their

Death of a Wish run in exchange for score multipliers.

In Martyr Mode, the cumulative score of each mandatory encounter is recorded and factored into your final score at the end of each run. Bonus points are rewarded for completing optional objectives and taking on Challenge Cards.

The start of each track will present players with three Challenge Cards to pick from. Challenge Cards introduce new rule modifiers that mix up combat and increase difficulty. These include rules such as:

Comeback

Upon recovering from a status effect, enemy attacks are 100% more powerful for 10 seconds.

Break Invuln (ii)

Enemy invulnerable after recovering from Break for 4 seconds

Lost Grace (ii)

Reduces non-S Rank Corruption reduction by 75%.

Each Challenge Cardwill introduce more challenging rules, but grant greater score bonuses during a run. Challenge Cards will stack cumulatively over the course of a player’s entire run, so it is critical to make deliberate decisions about which cards to add to your deck and when. Escalating the risk can provide great rewards, but only if you can survive to complete them.

There are 40 challenge cards in all, and an infinite range of ways to mix and match them creatively to tune a run for a high score. How will you rise to the challenge?

BALANCES & FIXES

Reduced health of late-game bosses.

Slightly easier BREAKs on tankier bosses.

Reduced the penalty to health essence recovery on higher Punishment difficulties.

Increased the wind-up time on most enemy gunfire attacks.

Decreased the hitbox size of all enemy gunfire projectiles.

[Randomizer] Decreased the prevalence of miniboss and story boss summons in True Randomizer mode.

Boss Rush Mode

Death of a Wish is filled with devious bosses that will pose an exciting challenge to all sorts of players. The Apocrypha Update will add a Boss Rush mode that allows you to challenge all of them in a single battery of fights with limited resources. Every boss is scaled for endgame levels, ensuring that early game bosses still pose an exciting threat. Can you survive until the end?

Music Room

The Apocrypha Update adds a new room where you can browse and play songs from Death of a Wish’s dark soundtrack. Take some time to appreciate the bleak instrumentation and drones of Paradiso.

Training Arena

Practice combat against any enemy you have already encountered. Struggling with a specific enemy’s moveset and timing? Train against it in the arena to discover its weaknesses and vulnerabilities and achieve better outcomes in combat. Your attempts at challenging late game encounters will never be the same.

No patch notes available. This update brings the following to the game:

adds Randomizer mode (unlocks as a reward for completing the main game)

This mode allows players to replay the entire game with randomized enemy and item placements, including randomized starting equipment. Take on the game in brand new ways by mastering different combat styles and managing unpredictable encounters. No two playthroughs will be the same, so it’s almost like trying the game from scratch!

adds True Randomizer mode (unlocks as a reward for completing the main game)

For those who want to crank the difficulty up even more, this update also includes a “True Randomizer” mode that makes it possible for players to encounter mini-bosses and regular bosses as regular enemies in the world. These options provide Death of a Wish with new depth and replayability!

adds a new “Unlock Completion Rewards” setting under – Options – in the main menu

How to download updates for Death of a Wish for the Nintendo Switch?

To download the updates for Death of a Wish, you have three options:

let the console do its thing if you have automatic downloads activated, and didn’t completely turn it off

If not…

try to launch the game from the Home Menu while being connected to the internet. You should get a prompt when doing so: simply follow the instructions on screen;

select the game > press either + or – to go to the Options page > select Software update > select Via the Internet.

To check that you have the latest version installed, simply select the game on the Home Menu, and press – or + to go to the Options: the version number is displayed just below the game title.
