Bravely Second: the developers talk about the new jobs

In a recent interview with Dengeki Online, Tomoya Asano (Producer) and Shinji Takahashi (Assistant Producer) talked a bit about the new jobs in Bravely Second.

He explains that when the team comes up with new jobs, they always pay particular attention to the game balance. For example, they want to keep a certain number of offensive classes, of healers, etc..He then talks a bit about the Cat Master job, which was designed as a “play around” class. But even though it was meant as a special class for players to have fun with, it’s actually quite powerful. Cat Masters have a decent attack, and they’re great when it comes to team support.

As for the Performer and the Astrologian, they’re quite similar, but they have some major differences:

– Performers are about physical attacks and support;
– Astrologians are about magical attacks and support.

The developers wanted to add new classes based on magic, which is why the Astrologian job was created.

The Pâtissier job seems quite similar to the Cat Master one, as they’re both “play around” classes. But even though they both support the team, they do it quite differently: after all, the Pâtissier’s specialty is to weaken enemies, rather than enhancing allies. Both classes have very fun and cute animations, which show just how much fun the team had when they designed those two jobs.

Tomoya Asano then talks about the Exorcist job, which can “undo” things and make them go back to the state they were in a few turns ago. He explains that it was quite hard to balance everything with that class, and it was probably the area where they spent the most time in regard to game balance.

The Exorcist is basically a healing-type class, but it needed something special to differentiate it from the White Mages (which is why they’re used in a special way in the game). But at first, that job was a bit too useful, and its abilities too powerful: the team had to make several adjustements to make sure game balance didn’t suffer with this new class.

Finally, Tomoya Asano talks a bit about the Guardian job, which is both a Tank and Attacker-type class. They can take hits instead of allies, but they’re also quite good at attacking, making them really useful in battles. In Bravely Default, the Knight was pretty much the only true Tank-type class, so the Guardian job will be perfect for players who want both to defend the team and attack with the same character.

Bravely Second: End Layer (3DS) comes out on April 26th in Japan.
