NPD: sales for June 2015 (United States)

Software

In June, total Software (retail only) + Hardware sales were up by 18% compared to the same period in 2014. If you take games, consoles and accessories together, sales reached $869.4 million, and for once, all sectors saw growth last month.

According to the NPD, June was pretty great for Software with $345.5 million in revenues, which is +21% compared to the same month in 2014 (however, this is mainly due to the fact there wasn’t any major releases in June 2014). Liam Callahan (an analyst from the NPD) notes that Software sales are up by 3% for the first half of 2015, and with a strong line-up, they could also be up during the second half of the year.

Splatoon came out in late May, and it kept on selling pretty well during June: over 290 000 copies were sold during that month, and a total of 455 000 units since the game’s launch. At this rate, it’s quite possible Splatoon will reach 1 million units before the end of the year, especially with strong sales during the holidays.

Hardware

As for Hardware, sales generated $313.1 million in revenues, which is an increase of 8% compared to the same month last year (handheld sales are down Year on Year). According to the NPD, 82% of total hardware sales were from bundles, vs. only 35% back in 2014: that’s quite the change!

Nintendo provided a comment about those sales, and revealed that combined, Wii U and Nintendo 3DS sales are up by 20% year on year. However, this is mostly due to the Nintendo 3DS (and more precisely the launch of the New Nintendo 3DS XL in February), with sales up by 40% year on year during the first half of 2015.
