The Spectrum Retreat

Yesterday, Ripstone Games and Dan Smith revealed The Spectrum Retreat, a first-person narrative puzzler coming to the Nintendo Switch later this year.

Here’s all you need to know about it:

Having won the BAFTA Young Game Designers Award (YGD) 2016 for the prototype when he was only 18 years old, Dan Smith has subsequently developed the game with the support of Ripstone, building an intriguing narrative around the intuitive first-person puzzle action. Players must explore the pristine and uncanny hotel, The Penrose, solving its ingenious colour-coded puzzles and discovering the reasons behind their seemingly never-ending stay.

The Spectrum Retreat takes place in the near future at The Penrose hotel, a peaceful yet unsettling refuge from the outside world. As a valued guest, your existence is embedded into the corridors and guest rooms of The Penrose. Through exploration of the striking art-deco hotel you will begin to uncover the mysteries of both The Penrose and the uncertainties surrounding your current stay. Your desire to unearth the truth is obstructed by an array of colour coded first-person puzzles, mind-bending physics challenges and the growing fear of exposing your true intentions.

Catastronauts

Earlier this week, Inertia Game Studios revealed their latest game: Catastronauts, a “colourful and chaotic interstellar party game”, that’s headed to the Nintendo Switch later this year.

Here’s all you need to know about it:

Catastronauts is a fast-paced multiplayer action game in which players become a crew of intergalactic spacefarers who must work together to destroy an attacking enemy fleet, whilst frantically struggling to keep their own ship intact.

Co-ordination, co-operation and decisiveness are essential to victory, as multiple tasks need to be taken care of across the vessel. Who is going to fire the lasers, arm the torpedoes, repair a breach in the hull and extinguish that damned fire? Boldly go, or things will go badly!

In addition to the regular occupational hazards, each level offers unique challenges and dangers to deal with including solar flares and malfunctioning extraction doors. Meanwhile a whole host of unique mechanics will keep even the most experienced crew members on their toes.

Nippon Marathon

Yesterday, PQube shared some more details about Nippon Marathon, revealing that it would feature the following:

  • authentic Japanese commentary
  • full Japanese, Korean and Chinese text localization
  • L.O.B.S.T.E.R Mode

But what’s L.O.B.S.T.E.R Mode exactly? It’s one of the 3 Party Games found in Nippon Marathon: a pass-the-pad test of skill and endurance, for 2 to 8 players.

Here’s all you need to know about it:

After every player picks and names their own contestant, they must run Surfin’ Jack Cactus’ gauntlet: a precariously narrow, randomly generated assault course filled with swinging hammers, pneumatic boxing gloves, basketball cannons and irate American footballers, as well as paper targets that grant bonus time when hit. There may be some beached fish flopping around, too…

The player who records the longest distance before the timer expires wins the round, while all others shellfishly grab a letter. Between each round Surfin’ Jack Cactus spins his bonus wheel to see whether more time’s added to the clock or the course is re-rolled, and the sole winner is the player who manages to avoid being dubbed the LOBSTER, PRAWN or EBI (depending on the chosen length of the game).
