Japan: more sales data for Week 47, November 2017, Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon (Media Create, Dengeki)

Week 47 (Media Create)

Today, Media Create published their weekly report on video game sales in Japan during Week 47, 2017. It reveals that total Software sales topped 616 000 units, which is 45.84% of Week 46 sales… a massive drop, quite obviously due to the release of Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon the previous week.

On the other hand, Hardware sales are on the rise: 133.27% of Week 46 sales during Week 47, a significant increase due to the public holiday and the start of the holiday season according to Media Create. However, it’s clear that the Nintendo Switch is the one doing all the heavy lifting (as it has been during most of the year since its launch).

During its second week, Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon sold about 210 000 units (with the dual-pack counted as two units), and topped the charts once more. Sales during the second week account for about 20% of Week 1 sales, which is a fairly similar drop to the one for Pokémon Sun and Moon (1 893 000 units to 388 000 units, 20.49% of Week 1 sales during Week 2).

Day 1 sell-through (Media Create)

Here’s the Day 1 sell-through for a few games on Nintendo platforms:

  • [NSW] Nobunaga’s Ambition: Taishi (Koei Tecmo) – 30%. PlayStation 4 version sold more;
  • [3DS] Kirby Battle Royale (Nintendo)  – 10%. Slow start, but sales should improve during week-end, as they generally do with family-focused titles. Also, Nintendo seems to have shipped a large amount of copies ahead of the holiday season;
  • [3DS] Attack on Titan 2 ~Mirai no Zahyou~ (Spike Chunsoft). Terrible debut. From the looks of it, retailers expected too much from this game, probably due to the relatively good sales of the first entry (over 500 000 units sold to date).

Week 47 (Dengeki)

Dengeki report that Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon sold 250 000 during its second week on the market, with:

  • Pokémon Ultra Moon: 95 945 units this week, and 434 563 units since launch
  • Pokémon Ultra Sun: 95 709 units this week, and 436 103 units since launch
  • Dual-Pack: 29 400 units this week, and 279 100 units since launch
  • Combined: 1 429 000 units since launch (715 000 units for Pokémon Ultra Moon, and 714 000 units for Pokémon Ultra Sun), with the dual-pack counted as two units.

Quite interestingly, Dengeki do not combine the sales of the two editions of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, allowing us to find out that the Explorer’s Edition sold about 11 387 units at launch. In comparison, the regular edition sold only 2 427 units.

Finally, Dengeki report that Beyblade Burst: God sold about 10 000 units during the first 4 days.

Hardware-wise, Dengeki report that Nintendo Switch sales increased by 69% to 143 000 units, due to increased production capacity (that led to increased shipments). This in turn increased the sales of games, such as Super Mario Odyssey that sold 78 000 units this week (785 000 units since launch).

In November (October 30th to November 26th), Hardware sales increased by 25% (compared to October 2016), to 610 000 units. Unfortunately, Software sales are down by 20.1% to 3 169 000 units, due to the poor comparison with Pokémon Sun and Moon last year (Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon simply was not able to keep up with the original versions).

Here’s more data:

  • Hardware: 610 000 units (+25%) / 17.1 billion Yen (+38.1%) [5th consecutive month of increase)
  • Software: 3 169 000 units (-20.1%) / 18.6 billion Yen (-16.6%)
  • Total: 35.7 billion Yen (-2.9%)

Here’s the best-selling games for November in Japan:

  1. [3DS] Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon – 1 430 000 units
  2. [3DS] Call of Duty: World War II – 340 000 units
  3. [NSW] Super Mario Odyssey – 330 000 units
  4. [NSW] Splatoon 2 – 110 000 units
