UK: video games sales for February 2017

In its latest issue, MCV UK shares some sales data for the video games market in the United Kingdom (from GFK Chart-Track). Unfortunately, the situation didn’t really improve in February (January 29th to February 25th), and sales are once again down Year on Year (by units and by value). Sales did increase during Week 7, but it wasn’t nearly enough to compensate for the drop during the other weeks, especially Week 8.

  • Week 05, 2017 – 265,862 units / £7.8m (as opposed to 311,335 units / £8.7m in February 2016)
  • Week 06, 2017 – 249,367 units / £7.1m (as opposed to 281,054 units / £7.5m in February 2016)
  • Week 07, 2017 – 361,881 units / £11.7m (as opposed to 332,340 units / £8.9m in February 2016)
  • Week 08, 2017 – 260,284 units / £7.7m (as opposed to 339,068 units / £11.3m in February 2016)
  • Total – 1,137,394 units (-10.00%) / £34.3m (-5.77%) (as opposed to 1,263,797 units / £36.4m in February 2016)

As far as revenue go, the Nintendo 3DS was the 3rd most successful platform, with the Wii U at #5 (it actually went up one place). But as you can see for yourself, both Nintendo platforms are way below the competition…

If we take a look at sales by units, we can see that the Nintendo 3DS saw the biggest increase. Unfortunately, the amount of units sold remain quite low, which speaks volume of Software sales in February 2016… As for the Wii U, sales are actually below the PlayStation 3’s, which isn’t all that surprising for a dead platform that was never really all that popular.

  • 01 (01) PlayStation 4 – £17,698,800 / 549,361 (+6.80%)
  • 02 (02) Xbox One – £12,588,100 / 403,775 (+9.04%)
  • 03 (03) Nintendo 3DS – £2,160,900 / 79,618 (+10.53%)
  • 04 (04) Xbox 360 – £548,800 / 35,259 (-73.43%)
  • 05 (06) Nintendo Wii U – £445,900 / 20,473 (-40.00%)
  • 06 (05) PC Software – £411,600 / 18,198 (-63.08%)
  • 07 (07) PlayStation 3 – £308,700 / 21,610 (-70.00%)
  • 08 (08) Nintendo Wii – £68,600 / 4,550 (-55.00%)
  • 09 (09) PlayStation Vita – £34,300 / 2,275 (-64.00%)
  • 10 (10) Nintendo DS – ???£ / 1,137 (-55.02%)

For 2017, the Nintendo 3DS is the third most successful platforms in Software sales in the UK, but as mentioned above, said sales remain way below the competition:

Finally, here’s the Top 40 for Software, with only three exclusives:

  • Pokémon Sun at #19 (Nintendo 3DS)
  • Pokémon Moon at #27 (Nintendo 3DS)
  • Poochy & Yoshi’s Woolly World at #34 (Nintendo 3DS)
  • Super Mario Maker at #36 (Wii U and Nintendo 3DS)

There’s also some multi-platform titles:

  • LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens at #17 (Wii U and Nintendo 3DS)
  • LEGO Marvel Avengers at #26 (Wii U)
  • LEGO Dimensions at #28 (Wii U)
  • Just Dance 2017 at 37 (Wii U, Wii)
