Japan: more sales data for Week 7, 2017 (Media Create, Dengeki)

Media Create (Week 7, 2017)

Today, Media Create published its weekly report on video game sales in Japan during Week 7, 2017. It reveals that total Software sales topped 328 000 units, which is 66.98% of Week 6 sales. Media Create notes that sales for new games dropped to only 1/3 of their Week 6 levels, with 71 000 units sold.

But on the other hand, sales of already-released titles remained stable, which shows that the drop in sales is exclusively due to the new releases that didn’t sell nearly as much as those from the previous week.

Hardware sales also dropped, to 59 000 units (91.42% of Week 6 sales): this is the first time in 23 weeks that total sales dropped below 60 000 units/week, according to Media Create.

Dengeki (Week 7, 2017)

Dengeki points out that, in the past few years, the market shares of domestic games (developed/published by Japanese companies) has been shrinking, and as a result, the shares of western have been increasing:

• FY 2012: 4.9%
• FY 2013: 7.0%
• FY 2014: 8.1 %
• FY 2015: 9.0%
• FY 2016: 9.8%

Minecraft: Wii U Edition is currently the second best-selling western games for Fiscal Year 2016-17, with over 281 000 units sold at retail.
