Japan: more data for Week 33 (Media Create/Dengeki)

Media Create

Today, Media Create released its weekly report for video game sales in Japan, providing us with more sales data for Week 33. During that week, a total of 590 000 units were sold for Software, which amounts to 133.23% of Week 32 sales.

Media Create notes that sales of games on Nintendo platforms dropped by about 20% this week. This is obviously due to the end of Obon, which was split between Week 32 and Week 33 this year. Naturally, the increase in sales is due to the new entries, and mainly Tales of Besteria on PS3 and PS4.

Dengeki Online

First, here’s the sales for the two versions of Yo-kai Watch 3:

  • Sushi: 29 153 units this week, 547 204 units in total
  • Tempura: 27 053 units this week, 516 063 units in total

And the sales for the two versions of Puzzle & Dragons X:

  • Dragon: 8 795 units this week, 70 789 units in total
  • God: 7 637 units this week, 72 784 units in total

For Week 33, Dengeki notes that Hardware sales dropped by 6 400 units (-4.8%), while Software sales increased by 45.8% (59 600 units).

For Summer, they note that sales have been rather sluggish. Nintendo platforms, which are pretty family and kid-friendly didn’t perform as well as last year during this period, which is generally beneficial to them. Titles such as Puzzle & Dragons X and Yo-kai Watch 3 have underperformed, which had an significant impact on the amount of unit sold:

  • Wii U: 229 000 units sold (-30%), due to the lack of titles of Splatoon‘s caliber… or, well, any other significant title. Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympics did pretty well, but not enough to compensate;
  • Nintendo 3DS: 2.20 million units (-37.6%).

As a result, Nintendo’s marketshare dropped noticeably:

  • Global: 76% > 65.6%
  • Nintendo 3DS: 67.5% > 58.1%
  • Wii U: 8.5% > 7.5%

On the other hand, marketshare for Sony’s console increased.
