[Japan] Media Create sales for Week 42, 2017 (October 16th – 22nd) [Top 50]

Media Create

Week 42 saw the release of many games, and they took the first 6 spots of the Media Create Top 20. Unfortunately, none of them are on Nintendo platforms, so there’s nothing really new for us to discuss this week…

Wait, that’s not true. There is one lone Nintendo Switch game that was released last week, and barely managed to make it in the Media Create Top 20: the retail version of NBA 2K18 (ranked #19). It sold 2 689 units during the first few days.

This isn’t a lot, but the series has never been a big seller in Japan. What’s more, the Nintendo Switch version was released one month after the other platforms, and on a much smaller install base, so 2 689 units is a pretty “ok” result all things considered. That doesn’t change the fact it’s a pretty insignificant release, though!

Next, we have Splatoon 2, that drops from #2 to #7 because of the new releases. Sales also dropped, but not by much: it sold 16 483 units this week (that’s -16%). Actually, the same happened with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: it dropped from #3 to #8, with a similar drop in sales (-16%). It sold 11 142 units this week, bringing the total to over 750 000 units (758 957 units to be precise).

Finally, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild manages to stay in the Top 10 one more week, with 5 430 units sold. The drop in sales is smaller than for Splatoon 2 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (-11%), probably because weekly sales were already smaller. The game is selling pretty well in the long run, and no doubt sales will remain strong during the remaining months of the year.

Next, here’s how games in the second half of the Media Create Top 20 have been faring:

• 11./05. [NSW] Pokken Tournament DX (Pokemon Co.) – 5.224 / 102.359 (-38%). As you can see, it’s now sold over 100 000 units since launch. Depending on the sales trajectory during the remaining months in 2017, it could very well reach 200 000 units LTD.
• 12./04. [3DS] Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser’s Minions (Nintendo) – 5.092 / 43.094 (-58%). Sales should be strong during the holiday period, allowing this game to reach 100 000 LTD;
• 16./16. [3DS] The Snack World: TreJarers (Level 5) {2017.08.10} (¥4.800) – 2.882 / 183.780 (-27%). This game is getting closer to the 200 000 units threshold, but it’s not quite there yet;
• 17./15. [NSW] Monster Hunter Double Cross: Nintendo Switch Ver. # <ACT> (Capcom) {2017.08.25} (¥5.800) – 2.814 / 158.448 (-29%). Nothing much to say about this game, which should see stronger sales next week;
• 18./19. [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf – Welcome amiibo (Nintendo) – 2.748 / 256.413 (-21%). Another week in the Top 20 for the Nintendo 3DS that didn’t want to die!

This week saw a noticeable drop in sales for the Nintendo Switch, to 31 092 units (about 10 000 units less). This is presumably due to the incoming launch of Super Mario Odyssey, which will be available this very Friday worldwide. Nintendo are expected to ship a significant amount of Nintendo Switch consoles for that week (though it’s not clear how many just yet), and the company seems to be stockpiling for that important week.

It certainly would not be an exaggeration to talk of Super Mario Odyssey as the “4th launch” of the Nintendo Switch, after the initial launch in March, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe in April, and Splatoon 2 in July. Total sales for next week will most likely depend on the amount of Super Mario Odyssey bundles Nintendo ship to retailers, as we expect this SKU to account for the most sales.

One thing’s for sure, though: the Nintendo Switch isn’t going to become any easier to find in stores… in fact, it’s most likely going to be even worse. After all, the more games you release, the more potential games people are going to be interested in, and the more games they’re interested in, the more likely they are to want to buy the console in the first place…

Meanwhile, Nintendo 3DS sales are still dropping, with only 16 000 units sold this week. It’s clear by now the handheld is on the way out, and it’s not weeks without any releases that are going to improve sales. Unfortunately, there’s still quite a few weeks left until the next major release: Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, on November 17th.

This week, the Nintendo 3DS sold about 8 000 units less than during the same week, last year. Total sales for 2017 are still ahead of 2016 for now, but the gap gets closer week after week. It’s now about 61 000 units… but without taking into account the Pokémon Nintendo 2DS bundles (about 100 000 units).

Finally, the Wii U sold 40 units this week.
