Ys X: Nordics – Character trailers

Released in September 2023 in Japan, Ys X: Nordics (the latest entry in the long-running Ys series) will find its way to Europe and North America this October, courtesy of NIS America.

And ahead of that release, you can get to know the cast of the game via a series of character trailers introducing the various characters and their English voice actors.

Here’s the first character trailer, introducing Adol, Karja, and Dogi:

Adol Christin (voiced by Bryce Papenbrook. 17 years old, single-handed sword user)

The protagonist of this tale.

An extraordinary adventurer with fiery red hair and eyes burning with curiosity. He posthumously left behind over a hundred journals detailing his adventures.

It is said that at age 17, he departed Esteria, the site of his first adventure, to journey to Celceta. However, The Normans’ Paradise Lost, one of the travelogues found in his birth home, reveals that he made a stop in Obelia Gulf with his companion, the ex-thief Dogi, along the way.

Karja Balta (voiced by Cherami Leigh. 17 years old, hand axe and round shield user)

“I’m a Norman—a pirate.
One wrong move, and you might be my next kill.”

The only daughter of the Balta Seaforce’s jarl, Grimson.

She unabashedly leads a crew of marauders to carry out the Seaforce’s piratical activities. The sight of such acts strikes fear into the residents of Carnac, who refer to her as the Pirate Princess.

While she may look refined at a glance, she fights as ruthlessly and brutally as any Norman, axe and shield in hand.

Dogi (voiced Patrick Seitz. 23 years old)

“Adventure always seems to find us whenever you’re around, Adol.”

A brawny, bighearted bandit whom Adol met in Esteria.

Adept at hand-to-hand combat, his mighty fists are powerful enough to break through rock walls. Following the conclusion of his grand adventure around the ancient kingdom of Ys, he leaves his thieving ways behind.

Dogi shares an odd affinity with Adol (whose thirst for adventure is never satisfied), and always looks out for him on their journeys together.

And here’s the second character trailer, introducing Grimson Balta, Mirabel Asra, Rafe Evelies, and the Nameless Old Man):

  • Grimson Balta (voiced by SungWo Cho. 40 years old)

“We Normans walk side-by-side
with death every step of the way…
That’s what life is like fer us.”

The Jarl of the Balta Seaforce and father of Karja, the Pirate Princess.

Said to be on par with One-Eyed Ladoc, the infamous pirate of the Medo Sea, he possesses the charisma to manage his crew of ruffians and the shrewd political judgment to maneuver around the Romun Empire.

He is also capable of freely controlling the Berserker state, a Norman form of combat that turns heightened emotions into power. This combined with his excellent battle techniques makes him the strongest amongst Mana wielders.

  • Mirabel Asrad (voiced by Madeline Dorroh. 21 years old)

“Now, now, break it up, boys.
Is this any way to act in front of our guests?”

A nurse who works at her father’s clinic in Carnac.

While cheerful and friendly, she has surprisingly steely nerves, remaining unshaken even in front of the infamous Pirate Princess.

Grenn and the other youths of Carnac are careful not to defy her, as she has taken care of them since they were little. Nevertheless, she is a supportive figure, watching over them as they grow into themselves.

  • Rafe Evelies (voiced by Ricco Fajardo. 17 years old)

“No worries there, Grenn.
Your brain’s been fried since the minute you came out the womb.”

A young man who is childhood friends with Grenn, Cruz, and the other kids of Carnac, but left town to earn a living.

While he jokes around and pokes fun like a typical teenager with Grenn and Rosalind, he can be surprisingly mature for his age at times.

Upon returning to town, he avoids contact with his family and makes an effort to stay away from home.

  • Nameless Old Man (voiced by Brent Mukai)

“I’ve forgotten just about everything.
My own name… What it is I’m waiting here for…”

A large-statured old man who lives by himself in a small hut on a certain island where he tends to his farm.

He seems to have lost all of his memories, including where he came from, why he’s on the island, or even his own name.

Ys X: Nordics (Switch) comes out on October 25th in Europe and North America.
