United Kingdom: some sales data for 2018, Top 20 Software

Today, GamesIndustry shared some more sales data for the video games market in the United Kingdom in 2018 (provided by Gfk,IHS and GSD)!

They reveal that no less than 2.4 million game consoles were sold in the country last year. As for the Nintendo Switch specifically, sales increased by 20%, which is the biggest growth (not surprising since it’s only the second year, and the other platforms have all been out for many years already).

FIFA 19 was the best-selling game in the United Kingdom with 2.5 million units sold (down from 2.7 million units for FIFA 18), including 1.89 million units at retail alone. Unfortunately, that’s for all versions of the game, and no data is provided for each version individually.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was pretty successful, with no less than 458 675 units sold in 2018: that’s actually more than in 2017, its launch year. Like all evergreen titles, its sales grew as Hardware sales grew, and since it was on sale during all 12 months in 2018 (as opposed to 8 months in 2017), it’s no wonder it sold more in 2018. It was also the most successful Nintendo Switch exclusive title.

Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! sold 227 767 units, and if combined with Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee, it would have been the 11th best-selling game (so between 351 788 and 339 805 units sold combined, and 124 021 to 112 038 units just for the Eevee version).

As for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, it’s off to a strong start with 284 155 units sold in less than a month. No doubt this one will keep selling through 2019, and will have no trouble selling more than in 2018.

Quite interestingly, Super Mario Odyssey almost sold more than Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, with 240 710 units sold. Of course, a direct comparison doesn’t make much sense since the former was on sale through the full year vs. only one month for the latter. Then again, it does show that Super Mario Odyssey remains really popular with new (and existing) Nintendo Switch owners.

Finally, here’s the Top 20 Software (retail-only) for the United Kingdom:
