UK: video games sales for Week 24, 2016, May 2016

Week 24

Week 24 was a pretty average week for Nintendo in the United Kingdom. Granted, there’s still two Nintendo 3DS games in the Top 40, but both are down Week on Week, and will most likely be gone by next week.

Yo-kai WatchThe best-seller was Kirby: Planet Robobot, which lost 16 places at once and is now #30. Not only was it debut pretty average (#14 is nothing to write home about), but it doesn’t look like it’s going to sell on the long run. Naturally, it’s the best-seller on Nintendo 3DS, followed by Yo-kai Watch (which dropped from #33 to #39 this week).

On Wii U, Mario Kart 8 is the new best-seller, followed by The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD (boosted by the reveal of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild at E3 2016?).

May 2016

May 2016 saw some improvements on the British market, since sales are up both by units and by revenue (though the increase for the former is rather limited). Week 18 and 21 are actually down Year on Year, but the increase for Week 19 and 20 are more than enough to compensate.

Week 18, 2016 – 192,956 units / £5.4m (as opposed to 231,552 units / £6.45m in 2015)
Week 19, 2016 – 403,683 units / £16.3m (as opposed to 268,234 units / £8.5m in 2015)
Week 20, 2016 – 254,227 units / £8.8m (as opposed to 220,881 units / £6.1m)
Week 21, 2016 – 293,169 units / £10m (as opposed 419,370 units / £15.1m)
Total – 1,144,035 units (+0.35%) / £40.5m (+12.03%)

If you look at sale by platform, you can clearly see which ones were popular… and unfortunately, this is not the case of any of Nintendo’s platforms. On Nintendo 3DS, sales dropped by 5.12%, and it could have been worse if not for Fire Emblem Fates. On Wii U, the lack of compelling Software led sales to a 24.74% drop.

01 (01) PlayStation 4 – 633,795 (+54.86%)
02 (02) Xbox One – 269,992 (-4.89%)
03 (03) Xbox 360 – 61,778 (-59.26%)
04 (04) Nintendo 3DS – 59,490 (-5.12%)
05 (07) PC Software – 45,761 (-36.29%)
06 (06) PlayStation 3 – 35,465 (-59.83%)
07 (05) Nintendo Wii U – 27,457 (-24.74%)
08 (09) PlayStation Vita – 4,576 (-59.86%)
09 (08) Nintendo Wii – 3,432 (-72.63%)
10 (10) Nintendo DS – 2,288 (-81.75%)

If you look at sales in revenue, you realise just how unsignificant the Nintendo 3DS (and handhelds in general) is on the UK market. Even though it has the 3rd biggest market share, that market share is only 4.4%…

01 (01) PlayStation 4 – 62.8%
02 (02) Xbox One – 23.1%
03 (05) Nintendo 3DS – 4.4%
04 (07) PC Software – 3.4%
05 (03) Xbox 360 – 2.7%
06 (04) Nintendo Wii U – 1.8%
06 (06) PlayStation 3 – 1.4%
08 (09) PlayStation Vita – 0.2%
09 (08) Nintendo Wii – 0.1%
10 (10) Nintendo DS – 0%

Year on Year, YTD Software sales for both the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U are down:

  • 342 847 units were sold on Nintendo 3DS (-34.48%)
  • 225 584 units were sold on Wii U (-12.90%)
