The Super Mario Bros. Movie sequel to be called Super Mario World?

Next year, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is getting a sequel. Very little is known about it at the moment, but thanks to a slipup by NBCUniversal, we may already have the final title of the movie. In its NBCUniversal’s 2025-2026 Upfront press release, the company mentions a certain movied called… Super Mario World!

An exciting range of films from Universal Pictures, Focus Features, DreamWorks Animation and Illumination were presented, including Megan 2.0, Nobody 2, Bad Guys 2, How to Train Your Dragon, Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, Black Phone 2, HIM, The Phoenician Scheme, Super Mario World, Shrek, and Minions.

However, as of writing, that press release has been edited, and there is no longer any mention of Super Mario World in it. Of course, it’s possible said edit was due to Super Mario World not being the final title of the movie (and simply a codename of sort), though given the first movie was called “The Super Mario Bros. Movie”, it’s definitely possible its sequel will simply be named after the SNES classic.

Also, the post-credit teaser in Super Mario Bros. Movie strongly implies that Yoshi will play a much bigger role in this sequel, so it would make sense for the movie to be called Super Mario World.

With over 1.3 billion dollars grossed worldwide, The Super Mario Bros. Movie was a resouding success. In light of such a performance, a second movie was bound to be greenlit, and that’s exactly what was announced on Mario Day in 2024. A few months later, Nintendo announced that the movie would be released on April 3rd 2026 in most regions (with the exception of Japan, which is getting it on April 24th).

It’s not clear when the official title of the Super Mario Bros. Movie sequel will be revealed, though it’s likely it will be done via the Nintendo Today! app (which is where the release date of the live action The Legend of Zelda movie was revealed) within the next few months.
