The Plucky Squire – Ver. ??? (Challenge Update)

New Challenge Mode

Challenge Mode is a new game mode designed to test your skills with increased difficulty. This mode includes:

  • New enemies
  • Harder minigames
  • Harder bosses
  • Some layout changes for levels
  • The ability to fast forward through dialogue and
  • New Achievements

Remixed Pages

Pages with combat on have been reworked and side scrolling levels have new layouts.

Humgrump Desk Spawns

In the previous version of the game, we had Humgrump teleport some enemies into the level using his metamagic, but only in the book. We’ve now added these sequences to the desk too. These spawn in with VFX and a bubble that contains Humgrump’s face. Additionally, Jot can get electrified on the desk.

New Metamagic Enemies

Following on from the above, we have the glowing metamagic variants of some of the base enemies. They have their own effects and materials on the desk, and new sprites in the book.

  • Barfer Bug
  • Rat
  • Goblin
  • Spear Trooper
  • Popuff

Challenge Mode Enemy Variants

We have some upgraded versions of the existing enemies. These are all across both desk and book.

  • Tough Goblin (just harder)
  • Exploding Goblins (run at you and explode)
  • Metal Goblins (indestructible)
  • Exploding Jumper bugs
  • Tough Namastarlings (just harder)
  • There’s a new tough book-only enemy, the Rock Golem, which appears from Chapter 2.

More Difficult Minigame Patterns

All of the minigames, apart from the Sneak C09 game, Fish Grabbing and the C04 Fantasy Card Game have new difficulty settings and layouts. Buttergrump also has new patterns. There are little bits of extra functionality in some of these games as a result, such as ghost Archery bugs and new projectiles in Buttergrump.

New Iron Squire Mode

The Plucky Squire with permadeath! This is essentially Challenge Mode but with no continues. As soon as you die in Iron Squire Mode, your save is deleted, and you are sent to a new game over screen. We have one each for desk and the book.

Four New Achievements

There have been five Challenge Mode-specific achievements added.

  • Complete Challenge Mode: Pops up at the same point that the Adventure/Story Mode one pops up. It also auto-completes the Adventure/Story Mode too.
  • Get to Artia in Iron Squire Mode: This triggers at the end of C04 when the camera pans across to show Artia.
  • Complete all corrupted (Humgrump) Challenge Mode minigames (without skipping)
    • Boxing
    • Volleyball
    • Potion pop
  • Complete the Big Brawl at the end of C09 without dying.

Dialogue Fast Forward

You can hold the X button or Space Bar to fast forward through all dialogue without repeatedly pressing for each box that pops up.

Shiny and New – Streamline Mode:

  • Shorter, snappier dialogue that lets you enjoy the story but gets you to the action quicker
  • Fewer camera events that slow down player action
  • Added dialogue portraits for major characters
  • Added an in-game language change option
  • Added More Save History slots and moved them to “Load Save” in the “Save Files” menu

Bug fixes

  • Fixed soft lock in credits
  • Fixed bottom half of Alowynia card being blacked out
  • Various fixes to collision issues

The Plucky Squire – Ver. 1.4.0

Chapter 2
  • Fixed characters not combining properly in some platforming sections
  • Fixed the possibility of jumping into a portal incorrectly without a block
Chapter 4
  • Fixed getting stuck after scaling up a bridge
  • Fixed the text on a card being unreadable when approaching it
  • Fixed word getting stuck behind a frog
Chapter 5
  • Fixed some collision issues leading to dialogue box errors
  • Fixed issue of getting stuck between a specific object
  • Fixed the textures not appearing properly when entering the city
Chapter 6
  • Fixed a crash that could occur after some time in a minigame
  • Fixed a crate moving to inaccessible locations if placed on a minecart
  • Fixed a word being able to be thrown in an inaccessible location
  • Fixed getting stuck after brute forcing through a scary obstacle
  • Fixed necessary items able to be lost Fixed Zip not following Jot in some 2D sections
  • Fixed objectives not appearing properly in minigame after several attempts and more outside of word count.

Chapter 1
  • Fixed cutscene playing automatically before Jot enters Moonbeard’s house
Chapter 2
  • Fixed beetles not spawning during stealth section.
  • Fixed Topsy being able to roll on top of Jot, blocking progress.
Chapter 4
  • Fixed Jot being able to jump out of bounds in Caterplillar fight.
Chapter 5
  • Fixed Tiny bouncing off of the trouth instead of jumping into it.
  • Fixed key becoming inaccessible when thrown on signpost.
Chapter 6
  • Fixed incorrect spawning when jumping off the edge of the desk near the candle.
  • Fixed Zap not reassembling after all his parts are found and Jot returns to the mug.
  • Fixed getting stuck near an enemy at the laser wall in Resotub minigame.
Chapter 7
  • Fixed title freezing when reloading save file after Bomb Stamp is acquoired.
  • Fixed Jot not being able to use the Cannon Portal.
  • Fixed stamped bombs disappearing when player leaves and re-enters a page.
Chapter 9
  • Fixed Jot not being able to leave portal if incivibily is on.
  • Fixed bombs getting stuck when thrown at troops.
General
  • Fixed NPCs not spawning when using chapter replay function.
  • Fixed Jot getting stuck in textures when exiting portals on the desk.
  • Fixed line break codes displaying in certain languages.
  • Fixed overexposed textures in desk scenes.
  • Fixed Jot losing the ability to turn pages if the player flips back to the beginning of a chapter.

How to download updates for The Plucky Squire on Nintendo Switch?

To download the updates for The Plucky Squire, you have three options:

  • let the console do its thing if you have automatic downloads activated, and didn’t completely turn it off

If not…

  • try to launch the game from the Home Menu while being connected to the internet. You should get a prompt when doing so: simply follow the instructions on screen;

OR

  • select the game > press either + or – to go to the Options page > select Software update > select Via the Internet.

To check that you have the latest version installed, simply select the game on the Home Menu, and press – or + to go to the Options: the version number is displayed just below the game title.
