Super Mario Run: internet connection mandatory, interviews, more

Super Mario Run: Always Online

Next week, Super Mario Run will be released on iOS, making it the very first time ever a game featuring Mario is released (officially!) on smart devices. Unfortunately, there’s one aspect of the game Nintendo didn’t communicate on until now: it will require an internet connection… at all times. Even when playing the single player mode.

In an interview with Mashable, Shigeru Miyamoto explains that this is due to piracy concerns. And it’s not just about people downloading illegal copies of the game, it’s also to make sure that the game is “secure”, and that users can play it in a “stable environment”. In other words: “we don’t want cheaters to come and ruin your fun”.

The reason even the single player requires an internet connection is because all three modes function together. Since Toad Rally and Kingdom Building rely on the online save, having the World Tour (single player) mode work stand-alone (without an internet connection) apparently complicated connection back to the other two modes.

Shigeru Miyamoto explains that it’s also for security reasons that Super Mario Run is launching on iOS first, which means we can most definitely expect some pretty tight security for the Android version (sorry rooted/custom OS users…).

You can check out the rest of the interview by clicking here. It covers other topics such as the kind of mobile games Shigeru Miyamoto has been playing at, what excited him about designing games for smart devices, whether we can expect Super Mario Run on the Nintendo Switch, and more.

Super Mario Run – Interview

Want to learn more about Super Mario Run? There’s an interview with Reggie Fils-Aimé for you to check out. Speaking of Reggie Fils-Aimé, here’s a backstage fan Q&A from the Tonight Show:

Super Mario Run – Shigeru Miyamoto @ Soho Apple Store

If you want something a bit more… personal, TouchArcade has an article about Shigeru Miyamoto’s presentation at the Soho Apple Store. During this presentation, he talked about why he just keeps making games, how he began at Nintendo, why Super Mario Bros. had such a strange premise (two plumbers in a fantasy kingdom, trying to save princess), and more.

It makes for a pretty interesting, so if there’s only one thing about Shigeru Miyamoto that you should read today, it’s that article. Click here to check it out!

Super Mario Run (iOS) will launch on December 15th worldwide. The Android version will follow at a later date.
