Super Mario Maker: changelog and filesize for Ver. 1.40, video

Super Mario MakerYesterday, during the latest Nintendo Direct presentation, Nintendo announced that a new update for Super Mario Maker would be released on March 9th. It will add some new elements, such as keys or spiked pillars, along with Super Expert mode for the 100 Mario challenge. There will also be some changes for the Super Mario Maker Bookmark web portal.

The update will be released on March 9th, following some maintenance for the Super Mario Maker online services (click here for more details). Here’s the official changelog:

  • Added new elements, such as spiked pillars or keys
  • Added a new difficulty level for the 100 Mario challenge: Super Expert, unlocked when you beat it on Expert
  • Added new features to the Super Mario Maker Bookmark web portal, such as ranking categories for world records, or the number of first clears on courses
  • Adjustments have been made for a more pleasant gaming experience

This update requires 361MB of free space on your Wii U or external HDD. To download it, you have two options:

  • let the Wii U do its thing if you have automatic downloads activated. You should have the latest version downloaded and installed the next time you turn on your console;
  • if not, you can launch Super Mario Maker from the Home Menu (not the Quick Start Menu), in order to trigger the update download manually.

To check that you have the latest version installed (which is required to use the online features), simply launch the game. You should see ‘Ver. 1.40’ at the bottom right of the title screen:
