Square-Enix: more Nintendo Switch games in the works, focus on original titles

Square-Enix has been one of the strongest supporters of the Nintendo Switch so far, and it doesn’t look like it’s going to change any time soon… In an interview with Game Informer, Tomoya Asano (Producer of Octopath Traveler) revealed that the company had several projects in the works for the console.

But we’re not just talking about ports, which makes up the majority of Nintendo Switch releases for some publishers (like Bandai-Namco or Capcom for example). Tomoyo Asaono explained that Square-Enix wanted to focus on “original titles for the Nintendo Switch”.

In April, his team was established as a proper division within Square-Enix. And if Octopath Traveler is successful, then that new division could end up focusing (exclusively?) on the Nintendo Switch:

If Octopath Traveler does well and this is something that appeals to fans, we want to focus on Switch. Please pick up the Switch if you want to play games like Octopath Traveler.

What’s more, Tomoya Asano specifies that Square-Enix is already working on several other games for the Nintendo Switch. And quite interestingly, it looks like Nintendo is somehow involved:

There are several other titles that we’re currently working on for Switch. If you could just wait a bit longer, we’ll work with Nintendo and announce them in the future.

Will we finally find out what on earth Takashi Tokita’s tease, back in April 2017, was all about? For those not familiar with the man, he’s the one who directed Chrono Trigger, and was lead design on Final Fantasy IV… definitely not your average developer!

Octopath Traveler (Switch) comes out on July 13th, worldwide.
